About The Position

This position involves welding together metal components of products such as pipe and metal of all types used in heavy equipment. The role requires the welder to obtain specified electrodes, connect welding units, strike an arc, and manually guide the electrode or gun along the weld line. The welder will perform welding in various positions (flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead), examine welds for specifications, apply filler rod, clean and degrease joints, and repair broken or cracked parts. Preparation of parts for welding, chipping off excess weld, and preheating work pieces are also key duties. Requirements

  • Completed standards outlined in the personnel achievement guideline or determined to meet the same qualification by the lead person based on division location.
  • 5 to 10 years of experience in Welding and Fabrication required.
  • Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language.
  • Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • High School Diploma or related equivalent required.

Nice To Haves

  • Be willing to become a Certified Welder (if not certified).
  • Post High School trade school desired.
  • Combination of education and experience will be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Welds together metal components of products such as pipe, metal of all types used in heavy equipment.
  • Obtains specified electrode and inserts electrode into portable holder or threads consumable electrode wire through portable welding gun.
  • Connects cables from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse, as specified.
  • Starts power supply to produce electric current.
  • Strikes (forms) arc that generates heat to melt and deposit metal from electrode to work piece and join edges of work piece.
  • Manually guides electrode or gun along weld line, maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from color of metal, sound of weld, and size of molten puddle.
  • Welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Examines weld for bead size and other specifications.
  • Applies filler rod manually to supply weld metal.
  • Cleans or degreases weld joint or work piece.
  • Repairs broken or cracked parts and fills holes.
  • Prepares broken parts for welding by grooving or scarfing surfaces.
  • Chips off excess weld, slag, and spatter.
  • Preheats work piece with hand torch or heating furnace.
  • Positions and clamps work pieces together or assembles them in jig or fixture.
  • Tacks assemblies together.
