About The Position

The Service Technician role requires varying knowledge and skill levels to perform technical and labor tasks assigned by Job Leads or Project Technical & QA/QC Supervisors. A key aspect of this role is the ability to effectively carry out duties, including regular non-job lead work. Service Technicians are also responsible for significant on-the-job training and mentoring of technicians at all levels, focusing on new tasks, knowledge acquisition, and competency sign-offs. This includes training on 'Condition As Found' & 'As Left' data collection, understanding drive/shaft line components, performing optical and laser alignment checks, and executing various marine & industrial technical works. The position also involves report writing according to DATUM RMS standards and client requirements, as well as comprehending technical reports to identify necessary work. This role is critical for upholding the company's reputation and maintaining high standards of work and service across all projects.

Requirements

  • Sufficient skill in and knowledge of the technical and labor tasks to effectively carry out the duties of Service Technicians.
  • Technical knowledge, expertise, skills, and competency (for senior level technicians performing mentoring).
  • Knowledge of Condition ‘As Found’ & ‘As Left’ data collection, including its purpose, usage, required data, correct procedures, techniques, tooling, and recording procedures.
  • Identification, knowledge, and comprehension of purpose of drive / shaft line components, and configurations.
  • Proficiency in Optical Alignment Checks.
  • Proficiency in Laser Alignment Checks.
  • Ability to perform Marine & Industrial technical works.
  • Ability to write reports per DATUM RMS standard service & technical reports or clients.

Responsibilities

  • Accomplish technical and labor tasks/work assigned by the Job Lead or Project Technical & QA/QC Supervisors.
  • Perform regular non-job lead work that is usually of the same kind and level as that done by the group being led.
  • Provide On-The-Job Training / Mentoring of technicians of all levels, in new tasks/jobs to accelerate knowledge and skills acquisition.
  • Sign off competency-based skills in Technician Training Competency Skills Book.
  • Provide On-The-Job Training / Mentoring on Condition ‘As Found’ & ‘As Left’ data collection, including reason for data collection, how it is used, required data for specific job tasks, correct procedures and techniques, use of correct tooling, and recording procedures.
  • Provide On-The-Job Training / Mentoring on identification, knowledge, and comprehension of purpose of drive / shaft line components, and configurations.
  • Provide On-The-Job Training / Mentoring on Optical Alignment Checks.
  • Provide On-The-Job Training / Mentoring on Laser Alignment Checks.
  • Perform any and all other technical works – Marine & Industrial.
  • Perform report writing per the DATUM RMS standard service & technical reports or clients.
  • Comprehend service & technical reports, and identify required works from the reports.
  • Attend pre-works brief with the team on the project job/task instructions with assigned labor hours.
  • Conduct primary assessments of projects, including General ‘Condition as Found’ report, Work Area conditions, General condition of equipment/machinery, Cleanliness and safety concerns, Photos and completion of ‘Job Technical Specifications’ form.
  • Identify obvious changes to the original scope of work per the Work Order.
  • Identify AWA Estimate opportunities at the onset of a project.
  • Initiate work, including comprehension of immediate tasks, safety review, and tooling required.
  • Work with the team and set the work pace.
  • Demonstrate proper work methods.
  • Ensure needed plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available, and that required parts/materials were ordered in advance.
  • Obtain needed information or decisions from Project Job Lead on actual & potential problems/issues that come up during project works.
  • Maintain current knowledge and answer questions of other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions, Quality Assurance (QA)/Quality Control (QC) to identify AWA opportunities from scope creep, and other directives.
  • Ensure efficiency by seeing to it that there is enough work to keep everyone in the work crew busy.
  • Perform Quality Assurance (QA)/Quality Control (QC) work while in progress and when finished to see whether instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, AWA opportunities and deadlines have been met.
  • Direct other workers to follow instructions received from Job Lead & Project Technical & QA/QC Supervisors, and to meet deadlines.
  • Assure that health/safety and environment (HSE), safe work practices, and housekeeping rules are followed and understood within the team.
  • Ensure team safety meetings are held with all stakeholders prior to dangerous works being started.
  • Ensure all tools are used in a proper safe manner per the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Assure that rigging equipment safety operational limits are not exceeded.
  • Report to Project Job Lead on status and progress of work, and causes of work delays.
  • Answer questions of the Project Job Lead on specific work/task operations (e.g., Task progress, Task Scope creep, Additional identified works, AWA opportunities, Parts and materials required, Sub-contractor requirements, Equipment requirements, Additional on-the-job training requirements for individual employees).
  • Create Technical & Service Reports for projects per company Policy & Standard Operating Procedures, ensuring they are formatted per company expectations and contain accurate data.
  • Identify technical tasks that require Standard Operating Procedures, and/or training for technicians.
  • Identify work procedures that require updating/modification, and additional training for technicians.
  • Identify technicians performing substandard works, applying poor work practices, undertaking work processes in an unsafe manner, and report to management.
  • Report and assist with investigation for Accident & Incident Reports for all incidents /accidents.
  • Assist with the facilitation of in-house training, including instruction as required.
  • Sign off technical competencies for lower-level Technicians in their Technician Training Competency Skills Book.
  • Perform any additional tasks that require the technical, training, and supervisory knowledge and skills possessed by Project Service Technicians.
  • Ensure the company reputation and standard of work & service is at the highest standard, on every project, and non-project work.
  • Engage in self-motivated learning through the DATUM RMS Training pathway.
  • Increase technical and skills knowledge of all operational technicians by on-the-job training and mentoring.
  • Demonstrate personal integrity, accountability, attention to detail, honesty, leadership, and efficiency.
  • Work in teamwork and towards a common goal efficiently.
  • Comprehend the Project Work Order as approved by the client.
