The Service Coordinator in the operating room facilitates smooth operations of a patient service area by providing clerical support for healthcare team members, patients, and families on an inpatient unit. This role facilitates communication with and between staff members, patients, and family members to ensure that information related to patient conditions and concerns is relayed in a timely manner. The Service Coordinator accesses and operates the paging system, phones, call lights, and internal Information Technology Help Desk to locate and communicate with staff and maintain smooth operation of the unit. They enter data into the computer, prepare new patient charts for admissions, and ensure appropriate forms and paperwork are in order to maintain accurate medical records. The role also audits charts to identify missing or incomplete records and processes and requisitions patient care service orders based on physician orders and instruction from professional staff. Additionally, the Service Coordinator processes completed records following patient discharge and handles OR Scheduling by arranging for scheduled patients' arrival into the O.R. to reduce or eliminate unused O.R. time. They mobilize scheduled or unscheduled cases when scheduling opportunities arise and communicate to key members of the health care team to ensure use of O.R. time. The Service Coordinator also communicates with various departments regarding items needed for patient care and cross-trains to other assignments as directed by the Nurse Manager.
