About The Position

This role provides local and out-of-territory commissioning and service technical support, as well as startup for full power plant EPC projects. Responsibilities include adherence to design implementation, technical support, tuning, testing, coordination with BOP commissioning, programming, performance testing, service technical support, and contractual adherence. The engineer will learn and understand the installation and application of various equipment and systems provided, designed, installed, and maintained by the Energy Solutions Engineering, Procurement and Construction team. This includes Industrial and Petroleum Engines, Electric Power Generators, Automatic Transfer Switches and Switchgear, Caterpillar Microgrid Products, Energy Storage Systems, Solar Power (PV, Inverters, System Controllers, Racking and Tracking Systems, etc.), Turbines, Distributed Control Systems, and other Power Systems Equipment such as Transformers, Emissions Reduction Systems, and Battery Systems.

Requirements

  • College Degree in Engineering, from an accredited 4yr College or University or a combination of education and multiple relative years of power generation commissioning and service experience.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience in power generation, specifically service and/or commissioning or a minimum of 2 years as a Service & Commissioning Engineer I.
  • Advanced intellectual and application knowledge of power generation systems (engine, generator and electrical systems), preferably Caterpillar and other major power industry brands, technical support and service support.
  • Experience with QA/QC processes, inspection procedures, commissioning documentation, turnover packages, punch list management, and turnover verification activities.
  • Successful understanding of how engines and generators are used.
  • Knowledge of commissioning quality systems and project turnover requirements.
  • Advanced computer skills including an excellent understanding and professional experience with the use of computer software programs, such as Microsoft, AutoCAD, CAT ET, etc.
  • Successful completion and testing of large scale and complex power generation projects.
  • Ability to apply advanced knowledge to exercise discretion and judgement in decision making.
  • Ability to work effectively with others, both inside and outside the company.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
  • Basic public speaking skills.
  • Ability to organize time and priorities.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Operate a company vehicle requiring a valid driver’s license (driving record must meet company insurance standards and is reviewed annually).

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols including Modbus, Ethernet/IP, CANbus, OPC, and similar communication networks is a plus.
  • PLC programming, troubleshooting, and industrial control system knowledge is a plus.
  • Extensive technical knowledge of power generation and BOP equipment.
  • Additional certificates or endorsements from applicable training related to commissioning and service technician in power generation.
  • Caterpillar Power Generation experience is highly desirable.
  • Additional commissioning, controls, QA/QC, or power generation certifications are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide local, and out of territory, Commissioning and Service technical support and implementation, as well as startup of full power plant EPC projects.
  • Review contractual and design specifications to understand requirements and commitments, creating a specification review to identify discrepancies, exceptions, clarifications, and/or special notes.
  • Work closely with the designated Energy Solutions Engineering, Procurement and Construction team on individual projects.
  • Generate necessary power plant testing, commissioning and service reports and tests utilizing Energy Solutions resources.
  • Perform QA/QC inspections and audits during installation, commissioning, startup, and service activities.
  • Verify completion of installation and commissioning checklists, turnover packages, punch list items, testing documentation, and as-built records.
  • Review and validate quality documentation, inspection reports, and commissioning records.
  • Coordinate with engineering, construction, contractors, vendors, and customers to resolve quality-related issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Assist in building Operation and Maintenance (O&M) Manuals including as built information.
  • Provide ongoing Service Technical Support as needed to maintain power plant service contractual adherence.
  • Keep track of all information regarding Commissioning and Service testing, tuning, etc. using the required software.
  • Report the progress of each project and its current phase to the Energy Solutions Engineering, Procurement and Construction Team and the Service Contracts and Equipment Manager.
  • Ensure reporting accuracy, efficiency and history of each Energy Solutions project and service contract for continued future improvement.
  • Work on other projects throughout Energy Solutions as designated by Service and Commissioning Engineer Supervisor and/or Director of Operations.
  • Coordinate advertising, promotion and marketing activities with various entities in the Company and with Caterpillar.
