About The Position

The Service Apprentice is an entry-level, training-focused position designed to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain and repair County vehicles and equipment. This position supports Fleet operations while participating in structured, hands-on learning across multiple service areas, including preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repair of light- and heavy-duty vehicles. The apprentice will work under the supervision of experienced technicians and is expected to progressively build technical competencies with the goal of advancing into a Service Journeyman role.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Basic knowledge of hand tools and equipment
  • Must obtain ASE certifications as required over time.
  • Valid State of Colorado driver’s license required.
  • Must obtain Class A CDL with air brake, manual, and tanker endorsements within a specified timeframe.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Willingness to learn computer-controlled engine systems and diagnostic tools.
  • Must pass a criminal background check and an acceptable motor vehicle record review.
  • This is a safety-sensitive position subject to random drug testing.

Nice To Haves

  • Enrollment in or completion of a technical/trade program in automotive or diesel technology is preferred.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge or experience preferred.
  • Previous shop or mechanical experience is beneficial but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Performs basic preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment, including oil changes and tire service.
  • Assists the Service Journeyman in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Learn to inspect defective and malfunctioning equipment and assist with diagnostic testing using appropriate tools and equipment.
  • Assists with the disassembly and reassembly of engines, components, and related systems.
  • Performs basic shop tasks, including cleaning, organizing, and maintaining tools and work areas.
  • Assists with parts inventory and shop organization.
  • Learn to perform safety inspections on vehicles and equipment.
  • Assists with minor welding, fabrication, and shop repairs as skill level allows.
  • Participation in field service calls as assigned.
  • Maintains accurate records of work performed in the Fleet Information Management System.
  • Follows all County policies, safety procedures, and environmental regulations to ensure a safe working environment.
  • May be required to respond to emergency or after-hours operations as needed.
  • Demonstrates continuous learning and progression toward journeyman-level competency.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
