About The Position

Union at The Press Hotel in Portland, Maine is hiring servers to join our team of hospitality professionals. This role involves greeting, directing, seating, and taking food and beverage orders, serving guests in accordance with company standards, and being knowledgeable of all food and drink offered. Servers are expected to use suggestive selling methods to drive revenue growth, communicate daily specials and specialty menus, and be perceptive, proactive, and engaging to anticipate guest needs and personalize their experience. Responsibilities also include completing pre-shift preparations like setting tables and preparing service stations, as well as side work and closing tasks such as cleaning and restocking. The role requires operating efficiently and calmly during peak service times and high-stress situations, seeking assistance from leadership when needed. Additional duties include polishing glassware and flatware, recording breakage, removing trash, restocking service stations and bar areas, making coffee, tea, and espressos, preparing and presenting final bills, and processing payments accurately using the POS system. Reconciling cash, charging credit cards, and making cash deposits at the end of the shift are also required, along with checking out with a manager. The position emphasizes practicing cleanliness and safety in all dining and storage areas, professionally handling guest complaints, solving problems, and communicating elevated issues to management. Assisting team members to promote a positive teamwork environment, practicing conscious knowledge of food allergies and safety, and demonstrating a team-focused attitude are crucial. Understanding and using safe work practices for all safety precautions, including Emergency Evacuation Procedures, Violence in the Workplace, Accident Reporting, OSHA Compliance, and Bloodborne Pathogen Procedures, is mandatory. Attending meetings and training sessions as required and complying with all policies outlined in the Handbook, Property Supplement, or otherwise issued, including time and attendance, uniform and dress code, anti-harassment, and substances in the workplace, are also part of the role.

Requirements

Ability to remain standing for up to 8 hours
Ability to lift items overhead.
Ability to bend and reach frequently and repetitively during a shift.
Ability to remain in a standing or walking position for 90% of shift, given moderate rest breaks.
Ability to move up and down stairs
Ability to move quickly based on guest needs
Ability to regularly move and lift up to 50 lbs.
Ability to use repetitive manual dexterity, such as typing, polishing, using hand tools, and fixing small items
Ability to bend, stretch, and reach frequently, including above head, and repetitively during a shift

Ability to communicate and exchange information effectively, often in a public/group setting
Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English
Ability to complete a satisfactory background check
Ability to perform assigned tasks, operate equipment, and complete job duties in a safe manner
Ability to work flexible hours based on business needs including midweek and weekend days

Responsibilities

Greet, direct, seat, and take food and beverage orders.
Serve guests in accordance with company standards.
Be knowledgeable of all food and drink offered.
Use suggestive selling methods to drive revenue growth.
Understand and communicate daily specials and specialty menus to guests.
Be perceptive, proactive, and engaging; anticipate guest needs and personalize the guest experience.
Complete pre-shift preparation such as setting tables and preparing service station.
Complete side work and closing tasks as required such as cleaning and restocking for next shift.
Operate efficiently and calmly throughout peak service times and high stress situations; seek assistance from leadership when needed to ensure guest satisfaction.
Polish glassware and flatware, record any breakage.
Remove trash and restock service stations and service bar areas.
Make coffee, tea, and espressos.
Prepare and present final bill to guest for payment; obtain settlement and process using the POS system with adjusted tip if noted.
Reconcile cash, accurately charge credit cards, and make appropriate cash deposits at end of shift.
Check out with manager once shift is complete.
Practice cleanliness and safety in all dining areas, liquor and wine storage areas.
Professionally handle guest complaints, solve problems, apologize/emphasize during guest complaints, and follow up.
Communicate any elevated complaints that could not be resolved to Food & Beverage management.
Assist team members as needed to promote a positive teamwork environment.
Practice conscious knowledge of food allergies and safety; communicate allergy concerns to guests.
Demonstrate a team-focused attitude and encourage collaboration.
Understand and use safe work practices for all safety precautions including Emergency Evacuation Procedures, Violence in the Workplace, Accident Reporting, OSHA Compliance, and Bloodborne Pathogen Procedures.
