About The Position

The University Police department within the Division of Administration and Finance is dedicated to ensuring the University Community's right to a crime free environment through exemplary and professional service. Our mission is to partner with students, staff, and faculty to support a safe, inclusive, and welcoming university for Titans to thrive. Pursuing a holistic safety vision to evolve university policing to new heights of excellence within the CSU and beyond. We seek an exceptional individual to join our team as the Sergeant. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to inclusivity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness. Under general supervision of a Commanding Officer, the Sergeant is assigned primary responsibility as a working, first line supervisor, in addition to general law enforcement, holistic safety, and specialized work assignments performed by police officers and corporals. Sergeants support and participate in community engagement and presentations to help build and maintain trust within the Titan community. Work assignments require the use of independent judgement and the ability to provide leadership to others. Sergeants are the primary patrol Watch Commander and responsible for all on-duty University Police employees during the absence of Command Staff. Sergeants plan, assign, coordinate and supervise assigned staff on a shift, task force, or unit on a regular basis. Sergeants develop, implement, and enforce campus and department policies, procedures, and regulations within their assigned area of responsibilities. Provide on-the-job training, mentoring, coaching, development, and evaluation of assigned staff. Complete other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of law enforcement methods and procedures, criminal codes and laws, and investigative techniques and procedures
  • Graduation from a P.O.S.T. academy
  • Basic Course Certificate
  • Four or more years of active law enforcement experience
  • A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily

  • Ability to maintain accurate time records and prepare statistical reports
  • Current CSU Police experience
