APPLICANTS MUST BE PERMANENT IN THE SPECIAL OFFICER CIVIL SERVICE TITLE The Department of Social Services (DSS) is comprised of the administrative units of the New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA) and the Department of Homeless Services (DHS). HRA is dedicated to fighting poverty and income inequality by providing New Yorkers in need with essential benefits such as Food Assistance and Emergency Rental Assistance. DHS is committed to preventing and addressing homelessness in New York City by employing a variety of innovative strategies to help families and individuals successfully exit shelter and return to self-sufficiency as quickly as possible. HRA’s Office of Police Operations (OPO) manages approximately 125 uniformed Peace Officers and more than 450 contracted security guards assigned to HRA’s facilities citywide. OPO’s primary responsibility is to protect the safety of HRA’s employees and clients, as well as their property and the agency’s physical assets. OPO also provides security for special events, construction, and work conducted outside of normal business hours, and emergencies. Special Officers will be responsible for providing a high level of security and safety for staff, customers, and visitors at an assigned HRA location located throughout the five boroughs who has Peace Officer status and arrest powers. HRA Office of Police Operations (OPO) is recruiting for two (2) Supervising Special Officer-I to function as a Sergeant who will: - Ensure direction and guidance of the supervision of the physical safety of staff and customers assigned to all HRA locations. - Supervise Special Officers, which include training, counseling, correcting their actions while evaluating their work performance. - Conduct roll calls, inspect officers on posts and assigned work areas. - Effect arrests and/or supervise and assist in the arrest process and may appear in court. - Ensure that the highest level of security is provided at an assigned HRA location. Prepare schedules; assign contract guards’ staff; instruct the guards in their duties and responsibilities. - Respond to emergency situations in assigned work areas and assist other law enforcement agencies as required. - Oversee and monitor guards on an ongoing basis and evaluate the performance of the guards. - Investigate and prepare reports on security incidents or conditions which jeopardize the security and safety of the facility occupants as well as develop actions to deal with incidents and or/conditions. - Prepare schedules, assign contract guards' staff, instruct the guards of their duties and responsibilities. - Assigned to any HRA location within the 5 boroughs of the City of New York, and other responsibilities may apply.
