About The Position

Sergeants may be assigned based on need to either a patrol supervisory function and or a staff service function. Sergeants are responsible for the daily supervision of police operations to help ensure the safety and welfare of patients, visitors and other staff members of UH. The Sergeant helps to keep the hospital and grounds a safe environment free of theft and other criminal activities. The Sergeant also directs and leads the department staff in carrying out the essential duties of their position.

Requirements

  • High School Equivalent / GED (Required)
  • 3+ years Experience with UH Department of Public Safety (Required) or 3+ years demonstrated leadership potential through performance and career plan development (Required)
  • Demonstrated leadership potential through performance and career plan development. (Required proficiency)
  • Working knowledge of computers, radio, firearms, and close circuit television. (Required proficiency)
  • Willing to obtain additional training as needed for the overall efficient operation of the police department (Required proficiency)
  • Driver's License (Valid) (Required)
  • Successful completion of an OPOTA Certified Academy. (Required)
  • First-Line Supervision Training (required during first year of assignment). (Required)
  • Annual Firearm, Taser and all hospital mandated training (Required within 1 Year)

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, evaluates, trains, provides guidance and issues corrective actions for employees.
  • Relates to and works effectively with people of diverse cultural, economic and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Reviews and writes reports as needed.
  • Maintains availability by phone or radio for notification or consultation on emergency situations.
  • Using excellent customer service skills establishes and maintains effective working relationships.
  • Demonstrates progressive leadership and effective management.
  • Develops staff and builds a strong team.
  • Allocates resources effectively.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.

  • Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.
