About The Position
This is an excellent opportunity for fully sworn Illinois officers currently serving in a municipal police department to transition to a non-traditional policing agency that values your training, and to experience and enjoy the benefits of continuing your career while serving the community. The Lake County Forest Preserve District’s Police Department has a Community Oriented Policing philosophy and is responsible for maintaining the peace and initiating activities that build positive relationships with the public. The Sergeant enforces the Illinois Compiled Statues and District Rules and Regulations on District lands and is responsible for the protection of the public and natural resources. Provides field supervision for the Police Departments personnel, provides emergency assistance to the public and aid to local law enforcement agencies. Conducts surveillance, follow up investigations, and training for the Ranger force. Promotes good public relations. Supervises, trains, schedules daily work assignments and establishes priorities for field personnel. Instructs Rangers in work practices and procedures to ensure District philosophy is followed. Responds to staff needs and make command decisions in emergency situations. Participates in evaluating and disciplining staff. Documents employee activities and completes annual appraisals. Drives a motorized vehicle to travel to different locations. Performs tasks that require walking, bending, stooping, standing, kneeling, climbing, reaching and sitting. Performs lifting tasks up to 50 pounds.
Requirements
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice or closely related field.
- Completion of basic police training approved by the state and local law enforcement officer training board.
- Two years experience in the supervision of law enforcement officers, conservation officers or rangers.
- Ability to successfully qualify and maintain proficiency with a side arm and patrol rifle on an ongoing basis and maintain certification in specialized training areas such as standard first aid, and CPR.
- Must be a US citizen either by birth or naturalization, at least 21 years of age with a good moral character.
- Management skills necessary to evaluate and decide on course of action in relation to law enforcement and planning needs.
- Prepare and submit various records and reports including Activity Status Reports, evaluations, personnel action forms, disciplinary forms, and crime analysis.
- Knowledge of pertinent federal and state laws and local ordinances.
- Possess a valid driver’s license.
- Must be skilled in modern police practices and community policing.
