About The Position

This is a full-time position serving as a front-line supervisor for Police Officer I and Police Officer II staff within the Secure Transport Investigations Unit (Maryland Department of Health Police). The role involves conducting and overseeing criminal and internal investigations, managerial inquiries, and patient abuse allegations. The position requires Maryland Police Training Commission Certification, enforcement of Federal, State, and local laws, and a valid driver's license. Strong investigative, writing, and oral communication skills are essential. Supervisors must follow the chain of command, which ascends from Sergeant to Lieutenant, Captain, Deputy Chief, and Chief of Police. This position may involve reassignment to different shifts, recall during weekends, holidays, or off-hours, and participation in the On-Call rotation. Sergeants are designated as “Emergency Essential Employees” and may be mandated to report to work during emergencies.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or high school equivalency certificate.
  • Three years of experience as a certified law enforcement officer.
  • Possess a Police Officer certification as required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission at the time of application.
  • Applicants for this classification, formerly certified by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission as a Police Officer within the past three years and are eligible for recertification at the time of appointment, meet the certification requirement.
  • U.S. Citizenship.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Satisfactory background investigation, including a check of criminal history.
  • Oral interview.
  • Physical examination.
  • Possession of a driver's license valid in the State of Maryland.
  • DIP trained to operate State vehicles.

Nice To Haves

  • An Associate of Arts degree from an accredited college or university in law enforcement, criminology or related social sciences (can substitute for one year of required experience).
  • U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a non-commissioned officer in Protective Service classifications or Law Enforcement specialty codes in the Military Police Officer field of work (can substitute year-for-year for required experience).
