About The Position

SERGEAN T ROSTER (Open to Existing City Employees Only) Tooele City Police Department is beginning the process to fill a Patrol Sergeant vacancy and to create a roster that can be used for up to one year. All current Tooele City Police Officers who will meet the following qualifications by the effective date of promotion (which can be up to one year out), are encouraged to apply and complete the testing process. Promotion may only be extended to applicants who, by the effective date of the promotion, meet the following minimum qualifications: Associates Degree and 3 years of experience as a municipal, county, or state police officer, one (1) year of which must have been at the level of Police Officer II within the City of Tooele; or, Five (5) years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience as a municipal, county, or state law enforcement officer, one year of which must have been at the level of Police Officer II with Tooele City. The testing process will be as follows: 20% Captain's Interview Panel 15% Sergeants' Recommendation. Each sergeant will be provided with applicants' names and an assessment form. The sergeant will assess each candidate on scale 1 to 4 (Ranging from Not Ready to Certainly Ready) in key performance factors for Sergeants such as: supervising staff performance, working with upper management, self-starter, communication, leadership, and fostering teamwork. 25% Written Test(s) 10% Experience. 1 point will awarded per year of full-time experience as a sworn law enforcement officer performing traffic and/or criminal investigative functions for a public law enforcement agency. A half point will be considered for each year of full-time related experience such as corrections, special functions certified jobs, military law enforcement, forensics, etc. Points will not be added for experience such as reserve, private security, firefighting, EMT, etc. 5% Physical Fitness Test. The physical fitness tests will follow the testing criteria used by the department during the annual assessment. Candidates will be awarded 15 points for passing results and 0 points for failing. 10% Secondary Education through an Accredited Institution. Points will be awarded for additional college education received from an accredited institution as follows: 10 PhD; 8 Master's Degree; 6 - Bachelor ' s Degree; 4 Associate ' s Degree; and up to 2 for some college classes but future degree not yet obtained (.04 points per semester hour or .025 per quarter hour). 15% Practical Exercise(s) The top three names will be given to the Lieutenant for consideration and to make a recommendation to the Chief. Once the first selection is made, the fourth highest scoring officer's name will be added for consideration for the second vacancy so that the lieutenant has three names to choose from for each vacancy.
