About The Position

The County of Yolo is recruiting to fill one (1) regular, full-time position in the class of Sergeant at the Yolo County Sheriff's Office. The Position Under direction, the incumbent will supervise a group of law enforcement personnel performing patrol and investigative work; to supervise a specialized unit in the Sheriff's Office; and to do related work as required. This class represents the first level of supervision in the law enforcement series. An incumbent whose position is assigned to this class will typically supervise a group of Deputy Sheriffs on an assigned shift, a specialized facility such as a jail or branch jail, or a specialized function such as a civil or investigation unit.

Requirements

• Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade
• Five years of increasingly responsible law enforcement experience, two of which must be in the class of Deputy Sheriff with the Yolo County Sheriff's Office
• Possession of a valid POST Basic Certificate issued by the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training
• Possess and maintain a valid California driver's license, Class C or higher
• Ability to instruct and supervise subordinate personnel engaged in law enforcement work
• Ability to analyze situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action
• Ability to interpret, explain, and apply laws and regulations
• Ability to prepare clear, concise and comprehensive oral and written reports
• Ability to establish and cooperative relationships with fellow employees, government officials, and the general public

Responsibilities

• Supervises and assists Deputies assigned to patrol in various areas of the County
• Ensures that patrol activities are conducted in accordance with Department rules and regulations
• Supervises the activities of the Department on an assigned shift
• Plans, assigns, and supervises the work of subordinate technical personnel in specialized units of the Department, including the civil and identification functions
• Assists on calls for the protection of life and property, and the enforcement of local and state laws
• Ensures proper use of Department equipment by subordinate personnel
• Supervises the receiving and assignment of prisoners and the maintenance of security
• Supervises and assists in conducting preliminary and secondary investigations of crime, involving juveniles and adults
• Interviews victims, complainants and witnesses
• Orders and maintains supplies and commodities needed for efficient unit operation
• Supervises the receiving, booking and release of prisoners on bail or payment of fine in accordance with established procedure
• Assists in the training of subordinate personnel
• Maintains comprehensive and detailed records relating to unit or shift operation
• Cooperates and coordinates with other law enforcement agencies in the investigation of crimes and the apprehension of criminals and suspects

Benefits

• Educational Incentive - Employees shall receive a two and one-half percent (2.5%) increment above base pay for a two-year college degree from an accredited college or university OR five percent (5%) increment above base pay for a four-year college degree from an accredited college or university
• POST Incentive - Employees shall receive a two and one-half percent (2.5%) increment above base pay for a POST intermediate certificate OR seven and one-half percent (7.5%) increment above base pay for a POST advanced certificate.
