About The Position

This position enhances public safety for the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia and Department of Corrections staff and inmates. It achieves this by meeting re-entry objectives and by providing effective security services, programming, custody, and control of adult inmates within a major correctional facility.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Certification
  • Successful completion of mandated training for Correctional Officers and all other mandated training
  • Working knowledge and understanding of correctional policies, procedures, and practices
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, plan, schedule and supervise the work of others
  • Working knowledge in the use of security equipment including firearms, radio equipment, physical control devices, electric and electronic controls
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend workplace policies and procedures and to prepare workplace reports and documentation
  • Demonstrated ability to sufficiently receive, understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced knowledge or equivalent applicable experience and training
  • Current DCJS General Instructor Certification in at least one of the following areas: Firearms, First Aid/CPR, and Defensive Tactics Certification
  • Knowledge of adult training methods
  • Demonstrated ability to produce written reports using a computer
  • Experience delivering training in criminal justice, corrections, or law enforcement environment
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgement in carrying out group’s tasks within established guidelines
  • Demonstrated ability to present class materials to groups in a training setting
