About The Position

Apple is where individual imaginations gather together, committing to the values that lead to great work. Every new product we build, service we create, or Apple Store experience we deliver is the result of us making each other's ideas stronger. That happens because every one of us shares a belief that we can make something wonderful and share it with the world, changing lives for the better. It's the diversity of our people and their thinking that inspires the innovation that runs through everything we do. When we bring everybody in, we can do the best work of our lives. Here, you'll do more than join something — you'll add something. The optical sensing team integrates optical sensors across a variety of Apple products such as iPhones, iPads and Macs, enabling devices to interact with users and the environment in new ways. The team is seeking a self-driven individual with strong experience in optics, optical system design, and detectors to design, develop, and launch next-generation optical sensing technologies. This role involves analyzing data to enhance product design and manufacturability, driving failure analysis, and collaborating with various cross-functional engineering teams to deliver state-of-the-art sensing solutions.

Requirements

  • Strong background in optical design with foundational knowledge in optical and electrical engineering
  • Hands-on experience with optical lab equipment (light sources, microscopes, spectrometers, detector, free space optics on optical bench etc.)
  • Proficiency in scripting (python, MATLAB, etc) for model development and data collection
  • Minimum requirement of a bachelor’s degree

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with optical simulation tools (LightTools, Lumerical, COMSOL, etc.)
  • Experience supporting volume manufacturing, including test design, failure analysis, and statistical methods
  • Ability to build effective cross-functional working relationships
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong teamwork abilities and self-motivation to tackle technical challenges
  • Degree in Optics, Physics, Electrical Engineering or equivalent

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and launch next-generation optical sensing technologies
  • Analyze data to draw conclusions, enhance product design and manufacturability, and drive failure analysis
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams—including Optical Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Reliability Engineers, Test Engineers, Process Engineers, and Software Engineers—to deliver state-of-the-art sensing solutions
