About The Position

The Washington National Tax (WNT) Private Wealth Tax Controversy practice is seeking experienced professionals to provide technical advice and strategic support to Deloitte practitioners and their private wealth clients (high-net-worth individuals, their businesses, family offices, foundations, and investment entities) addressing complex federal tax controversies. In this role, you will support Internal Revenue Service (IRS) practice and procedure and private wealth tax controversy matters while building technical, writing, and client-service capabilities within an integrated national practice.

Requirements

  • Ability to perform job responsibilities within a hybrid work model that requires US Tax professionals to co-locate in person 2 – 3 days per week
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field
  • At least 2+ years of tax experience, preferably representing clients in federal tax controversies or representing the government in federal tax matters
  • Limited immigration sponsorship may be available
  • Ability to travel 10% on average, based on the work you do and the clients and industries/sectors you serve
  • One of the following active accreditations obtained, in process, or willing and able to obtain: Licensed CPA in state of practice/primary office if eligible to sit for the CPA exam, Licensed attorney, or Enrolled Agent

Nice To Haves

  • An advanced degree such as MS in Taxation, JD and/or LLM
  • Strong understanding of IRS operations, its procedures and its processes
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills: 2–3 years’ experience delivering clear, executive-ready written and oral communications.
  • Strong analytical abilities: 2–3 years’ experience performing structured tax analysis and translating findings into clear, actionable recommendations.

Responsibilities

  • Researching and analyzing the Internal Revenue Code, regulations, administrative guidance, and judicial authorities that apply to federal tax controversy matters
  • Developing controversy strategies and preparing technical memoranda, responses to IRS information requests and notices of proposed adjustment, protests, refund claims, and other persuasive submissions
  • Consulting with Deloitte practice teams on IRS practice and procedure matters, including statutes of limitations, penalties, partnership audit rules, confidentiality and privilege, and reporting and disclosure matters
  • Supporting private wealth tax controversy and service-center matters through strategy development, technical analysis, and written submissions
  • Developing tax alerts, presentation materials, national training content, articles, and practice resources; and supporting practice initiatives, leadership meetings, and emerging-issue coordination
