About The Position

The New York Times is seeking an experienced video editor with a strong portfolio demonstrating the ability to deliver engaging work on tight deadlines. This role focuses on vertical video storytelling with world-class journalists on-camera, requiring deep experience in breaking and ongoing news coverage and a track record of creating digitally compelling short-form video journalism. The ideal candidate will have a strong grasp of modern mobile video storytelling, be a quick learner with creative ideas, and possess the ability to work effectively in small or large teams. The candidate should be collaborative, technically proficient, solution-oriented, detail-oriented, organized, and fast. There are two positions available: one focused on News and Enterprise, and another on Culture and Lifestyle (music, film, fashion, real estate). The News and Enterprise role may be based in the LA office, while other positions are in-office in New York, requiring regular attendance four days a week. Some flexibility for remote work may be available per departmental guidance.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of multimedia storytelling, video editing, and production experience at a major news video outlet and/or production company. (Minimum 5 years of video editing experience.)
  • Strong digital video editing background.
  • Expertise in Adobe Premiere and Creative Suite.
  • Strong audio editing, mixing, and fixing skills for video.
  • Proven ability to craft stories, own video research for a project, and edit a video with oversight from managers and senior staff.
  • Thorough knowledge of current events, with experience covering news.
  • The ability to conceive and create fresh original videos related to the news.
  • Must have an impressive portfolio of video editing primarily for digital or broadcast.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience animating and editing animations in Adobe After Effects.
  • A digital-first mindset to editing on-platform and for social media.
  • Familiarity with the latest video editing techniques and technologies.
  • The ability to make quick decisions under intense deadlines in a high-pressure newsroom setting.
  • A foundational knowledge of legal, ethical, copyright, and usage issues for visuals.
  • Well-versed in the world of social and digital media, with a keen eye on what competitors are doing and what new tools are being used.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Video editing and color correction of news, culture, enterprise, and investigative videos featuring reporters from across the newsroom.
  • Collaborate with video journalists and producers in the pre/post-production process, including writing, structure, and creative execution.
  • Demonstrate excellent news judgment across projects.
  • Deliver top-notch product under intense deadline pressure, and without the need for direct supervision, continuous editorial guidance, or task management.
  • Work across a range of stories with various newsroom desks including culture and styles, often juggling multiple projects.
  • Work with animators to incorporate animation, motion graphics, and house design styles into videos.
  • Experiment with different formats of vertical and mobile visual storytelling.
  • Guide junior staff on edits as needed.
