About The Position

Blumhouse Productions, a prolific and recognizable name in film, is seeking a Senior Vice President of Business & Legal Affairs to join its Film studio. This is a hands-on, high-volume role, reporting directly to the EVP & Head of Business & Legal Affairs. The successful candidate will be in the room, on the deals, and driving things forward from day one. You'll be joining a small, tight-knit team that operates with a lot of autonomy and trust. The company moves quickly, takes the work seriously, and has a good time doing it. The volume is real and the pace is relentless, but so is the output.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in entertainment law, with a focus on the development and production of theatrical or streaming feature film content.
  • J.D. and active membership in the California State Bar (or eligibility and willingness to register as In-House Counsel).
  • Demonstrated experience supervising or mentoring junior attorneys or business affairs staff.
  • Ability to work proactively, independently, and reliably under tight deadlines in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Strong collaborative instincts and ability to work cross-functionally with creative, production, and finance teams.
  • Exceptional negotiation and drafting skills.
  • Strong analytical judgment and practical problem-solving orientation.
  • A flexible mind with a willingness to tackle matters outside area of expertise.
  • Must have a cooperative, positive, and team-oriented approach to work.

Responsibilities

  • Negotiate, draft, and supervise the drafting of a broad range of development, production, and distribution agreements, including above- and below-the-line talent agreements (producers, directors, actors, department heads), literary acquisitions, writer agreements, underlying rights agreements, co-production and co-financing arrangements, and other development and production-related matters.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop more junior members of the Business & Legal Affairs team, including reviewing their work product, providing guidance on deal strategy and negotiation, and supporting their professional growth.
  • Devise deal frameworks and templates in close collaboration with leadership and other internal stakeholders.
  • Maintain continuity, process, and proactive communication across all active projects.
  • Manage legal matters relating to development, including maintenance of forms and policies in connection therewith.
  • Advise on business and legal risks across a wide range of areas, including clearances, intellectual property, labor and employment, guild compliance, and immigration.
  • Maintain fluency with guild and union agreements (SAG-AFTRA, WGA, DGA), including collective bargaining compliance and evolving issues such as digital replica rights, synthetic performance, and other areas where industry practice and legal frameworks are actively developing.
  • Evaluate underlying rights and chain-of-title issues.
  • Stay current on legal, regulatory, technological, and industry developments as they affect the production, financing, and distribution of content.
