About The Position

Reporting to the VP of National Property and Casualty, this position is responsible for managing an existing profitable portfolio. Profitable growth of the portfolio through underwriting, sales and marketing, and superior service will also be an essential responsibility. As a Senior Underwriter in our P&C team based in Toronto, you will work closely with the VP, National Property & Casualty and a dynamic team to help implement underwriting strategies, improve products, and build strong broker relationships across Canada. Your role will involve underwriting new business and renewals in a profitable manner and according to authority level and established guidelines, and participate in special projects, designed to keep the team at the forefront of our customers that will have a true impact on our business. You will utilize underwriting tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges. Understand relevant laws and regulation to properly transact business within Canada and other relevant territories. Be knowledgeable in coverage forms and policy language; appropriately applying coverage and exclusions.

Requirements

  • 5+ years’ property and casualty underwriting experience.
  • Successfully underwritten large, multinational corporations, with a strong background in Property, Primary and Excess Casualty Lines.
  • Superior relationship management skills proven through established broker relationships.
  • Demonstrated track record of generating new business premium.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, comfortable with thinking outside of the box.
  • University degree, CIP or FCIP designation is preferred.
  • Expertise and depth in policy wordings, forms and applicable coverages.
  • Excellent presentation skills, comfortable speaking in front of small and large groups.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a contributing team member.
  • Exceptional time management skills.
  • Strong business acumen and capable of representing the organization externally.

Nice To Haves

  • Adept Manufacturing and/or Construction background would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite, service and grow a profitable book of business in accordance with the Markel's underwriting philosophy.
  • Partner with underwriters in our specialty lines to leverage multi-line opportunities.
  • Create and develop broker partnerships to ensure profitable portfolio growth.
  • Strengthen and build relationships with Markel's broker partners by attending underwriting meetings, broker events and industry conferences.
  • Adhere to all of Markel's underwriting guidelines.
  • Draft comprehensive referrals as required.
  • Mentor junior team members by providing advice and guidance on technical underwriting matters.
  • Stay abreast on market intelligence and Industry trends.
  • Lead and/or contribute to projects as required.
