About The Position

Zurich Canada is seeking a Senior Underwriter for its Middle Market team. This role involves underwriting and growing a portfolio of complex commercial P&C risks, building relationships with brokers and customers, and developing a profitable book of business within delegated authority. The position is open to candidates in Calgary, Edmonton, or Winnipeg and offers a supportive environment for professional growth. Zurich Canada utilizes AI tools in its recruitment process, but all hiring decisions are made by qualified professionals. The role follows a hybrid work model, requiring three days per week in-person presence, which may be remote for Edmonton and Winnipeg-based employees if no offices are established there.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and 3 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area.
  • OR High School Diploma or equivalent and 6 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area.
  • OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 1 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area.
  • OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 4 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area.
  • Knowledge of line(s) of business and the legal and regulatory guidelines.
  • Knowledge of time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite new and renewal commercial P&C business within delegated authority, focusing on accounts with higher technical complexity.
  • Assess and price risks using Zurich’s underwriting tools and methodologies, ensuring alignment with underwriting strategy and risk appetite.
  • Structure coverage, terms and conditions that meet customer needs while achieving profitable growth and portfolio balance.
  • Proactively build and manage a qualified pipeline of opportunities 90–120 days before they go to market.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with assigned brokers and key accounts, acting as a trusted advisor and primary contact.
  • Participate in broker meetings, marketing activities and presentations to promote Zurich’s capabilities and drive new business.
  • Collaborate closely with internal partners such as claims, risk engineering and other underwriting teams to deliver integrated solutions and cross-sell additional lines of business.
  • Handle referrals and coordinate on larger or more complex accounts, ensuring consistent application of underwriting standards.
  • Lead or support short-term projects (typically 3–9 months) aimed at improving underwriting processes, tools or customer experience.
  • Share technical expertise and provide guidance to less experienced underwriters, contributing to a culture of learning and continuous improvement.
