Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant industry experience, with a strong focus on excess and surplus lines and complex risk underwriting.
  • Deep understanding of the surplus lines marketplace, including peers, competitors, and market cycles.
  • Bachelor’s degree in insurance, business, finance, or a related field.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills, with the ability to assess risk and profitability in complex scenarios.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate underwriting decisions and rationale to brokers and internal stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional designations such as CPCU, RPLU, or ARM are highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Independently manages a diverse portfolio of complex and high-risk excess casualty accounts.
  • Utilizes expertise to make informed decisions within assigned authority.
  • Develops, manages, and strengthens relationships with wholesale brokers.
  • Plans, orchestrates, and leads highly effective broker meetings.
  • Proactively identifies and addresses broker performance issues.
  • Stays informed on industry developments, regulatory changes, and emerging trends.
  • Makes autonomous decisions on risk acceptance, coverage terms, and pricing within assigned authority.
  • Consistently meets or exceeds designated line of business (LOB) production metrics.
  • Applies strong technical knowledge in underwriting, coverage, and pricing.
  • Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of pricing and risk selection criteria.
  • Conducts a minimum of 7 trips per year to visit brokers, build relationships, and represent Verus at industry events.
  • Provides guidance and support to junior underwriters, handling referrals and ensuring consistent underwriting quality.
  • Collaborates with senior leadership to identify and develop new product lines and market opportunities.
  • Delivers exceptional service to brokers and insureds.
  • Ensures all underwriting activities comply with company guidelines, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
