About The Position

Westland Insurance Group Ltd. is seeking an experienced commercial underwriting professional to join their team as a Senior Underwriter, Commercial. This role is responsible for driving profitable growth by underwriting new and renewal commercial property and casualty business across Canada, including moderately complex risks and VIP clients. The position involves delivering exceptional service to broker partners while maintaining a strong and sustainable portfolio. This is a hybrid position based out of their Surrey, BC head office, with flexibility for candidates outside of current office locations. The Senior Underwriter will report to the Senior Manager, Commercial Underwriting and will play a key role in evaluating and pricing commercial risks, supporting broker relationships, and contributing to underwriting excellence. As a senior member, they will provide technical expertise, mentorship, and guidance to fellow underwriters, and help shape underwriting practices and initiatives.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of commercial underwriting experience, including complex commercial property and casualty risks
  • CIP designation completed or in progress
  • Advanced knowledge of commercial property and casualty insurance products, coverage structures, underwriting principles, and risk management practices
  • Strong analytical, decision-making, negotiation, communication, and relationship management skills, with the ability to assess complex risks and deliver exceptional client service
  • Highly organized and self-motivated, with experience mentoring or supporting underwriters and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment

Nice To Haves

  • Post-secondary education preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • FCIP, CRM, or CAIB designations are considered assets

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite new and renewal commercial property and casualty business across Canada, evaluating and pricing risks in accordance with underwriting guidelines, authority levels, and profitability objectives
  • Collaborate with broker partners to quote, negotiate, and structure coverage solutions for new and renewal business, including moderately complex and VIP risks
  • Build and maintain strong broker relationships while delivering timely, responsive service and supporting business growth, retention, and client satisfaction
  • Analyze risk information to determine acceptability, coverage structure, and pricing, applying sound risk management, loss control principles, and regulatory compliance requirements
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and referral support to underwriters while contributing to underwriting strategy, portfolio performance, process improvements, and departmental initiatives
