About This Role Dow Construction Chemicals (DCC), in Industrial Intermediates and Infrastructure, has an exciting opportunity for a Senior TS&D Technician in our Technical Service and Development team, based in Midland, MI . DCC enjoys a market-leading position across many of our applications spaces, such as elastomeric roof coatings, cement-based tile adhesives, tape-joint compounds, external insulating finishing systems, and caulks & sealants. We have a growth strategy that is centered on successful defense and incremental growth in our core markets, identification of adjacent growth opportunities utilizing our existing technologies, and development of breakthrough technologies leveraging the full Dow toolbox to expand into new markets. The successful candidate will be responsible for executing laboratory studies in support of TS&D projects related to end-use performance of construction applications, such as cement-based tile adhesives, tape joint compounds, and concrete admixtures. The job will provide an opportunity for the candidate to gain working knowledge of various raw materials that are used to formulate construction products, with a focus on dry-mix formulations, as well as to learn more about various application spaces and market needs. The candidate will interact with the entire Midland R&D/TS&D team, with potential interaction with global R&D/TS&D colleagues and the North American commercial team. Job responsibilities may include: formulating and testing dry mix mortar samples, tape joint compounds, cement slurry samples, concrete, screening of surfactants, latexes, cellulose ethers, redispersible powders, water reducers, silanes/silicones, or other raw materials and customer samples. This would include preparing samples for various applications, as well as generating data according to ASTM and ANSI norms. Potential instrumentation includes: viscometers, Instrons, VICATs (concrete setting apparatus).

Requirements

  • A minimum of an Associates degree in a science related discipline/Military Degree Equivalency (MDE) and 3 or more years of relevant work experience or high school diploma/GED and 5 or more years of relevant work experience
  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States.
  • No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.
  • Laboratory Skills: Applies basic laboratory techniques and scientific methods to safely execute routine experimental work.
  • Analytical Thinking: Performs accurate mathematical calculations to support formulations, measurements, and data analysis.
  • Communication : Communicates technical information clearly through written documentation and verbal updates.
  • Teamwork : Collaborates effectively within a laboratory or cross‑functional team environment.
  • Multitasking: Manages multiple tasks and priorities while maintaining quality, safety, and deadlines.
  • EH&S & Stewardship : Demonstrates consistent adherence to Dow EH&S standards and safe laboratory practices.
  • Initiative : Takes initiative by seeking additional work or improvement opportunities when tasks are completed.
  • Digital & Productivity Tools : Uses Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) to document data, analyze information, and communicate effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Formulating samples: dry mix mortar samples, tape joint compounds, cement slurry samples, screening of surfactants, latexes, cellulose ethers, redispersible powders, water reducers, or other raw materials and customer samples.
  • Testing samples, mainly on the following instruments: viscometers, Instrons, VICAT.
  • Sample packaging and shipping.
  • Setting up new equipment for testing, documenting new procedures.
  • General equipment maintenance, ordering laboratory supplies, and lab clean-up.
  • Data entry into spreadsheets/presentations/reports.
  • Data documentation in electronic laboratory notebooks.
  • Developing proficiency in the with the following materials: thickeners (cellulose ethers, starch ethers, etc.), surfactants, acrylic latex, redispersible powders, concrete admixtures, silanes/silicones, and various construction applications.
  • Adherence to all Dow safety policies.
