About The Position

The Senior Truss & Engineered Wood Designer is responsible for independently designing residential roof truss systems, floor truss systems, and engineered wood product (EWP) solutions that meet structural requirements, customer expectations, manufacturing capabilities, and applicable building codes. This role develops complete truss packages from architectural plans, produces production and placement drawings, sizes engineered wood products, and provides technical support throughout the project lifecycle. Working closely with Sales, Estimating, Production, Field Operations, Builders, and Design Management, the Senior Truss & Engineered Wood Designer ensures projects are delivered accurately, efficiently, and on schedule while supporting continuous improvement and mentoring less experienced designers. This position serves as a technical resource within the design department and plays a key role in maintaining high standards of engineering accuracy, manufacturability, and customer satisfaction.

  • Minimum 5 years of residential truss design experience
  • Experience designing roof trusses and floor truss systems
  • Experience sizing engineered wood products including LVLs, I-Joists, PSL, and Glulam members
  • Experience reviewing architectural and structural drawings
  • Working knowledge of IRC residential building codes
  • Experience with MiTek, MBA, Eagle Metal, or similar truss software accepted
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred
  • Experience with Alpine preferred
  • Experience using Forte, BC Calc, Simpson Connector Selector, or similar engineering software preferred
  • Multi-family construction experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Independently design residential roof and floor truss systems using approved truss design software
  • Design engineered wood products including LVLs, I-Joists, Glulam beams, PSL members, headers, and related structural components
  • Produce complete truss layouts, placement plans, shop drawings, production drawings, and manufacturing documentation
  • Optimize designs for structural integrity, manufacturing efficiency, transportation, installation, and cost effectiveness
  • Review and revise designs throughout the project lifecycle
  • Read and interpret architectural drawings, structural plans, engineering documents, and specifications
  • Verify designs comply with IRC requirements, manufacturer recommendations, engineering standards, and company design practices
  • Review framing layouts for constructability and identify potential conflicts prior to production
  • Coordinate engineering clarifications and design revisions with customers and internal teams
  • Recommend alternative design solutions when appropriate
  • Manage multiple design projects simultaneously while meeting customer deadlines
  • Track project schedules and prioritize workload to support production requirements
  • Coordinate closely with Sales Representatives, Builders, Project Managers, Estimators, Production, Installation teams, Panel Designers, and Field Operations
  • Support project turnover from design through manufacturing and field installation
  • Respond to customer revisions and field-generated design changes promptly
  • Release completed projects for manufacturing
  • Prepare bills of material and manufacturing documentation
  • Support production personnel by resolving design questions
  • Assist with troubleshooting production or installation issues related to truss design
  • Improve manufacturability while minimizing production waste and field modifications
  • Mentor and assist junior designers and truss technicians
  • Share technical knowledge and best practices across the design team
  • Assist Design Manager with maintaining design standards and quality expectations
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality, efficiency, and customer satisfaction
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
