About The Position

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) is seeking a Senior Transit Data Analyst (3057) to plan, coordinate, improve, and build out ridership and operations monitoring and management tracking systems. This role involves developing innovative data analysis methods to derive business insights from large datasets, conducting in-depth research and analysis, and fulfilling data and analytics requests. The Senior Transit Data Analyst will also produce novel datasets, train junior staff, and assist the Manager of Data Analytics with reporting activities and supporting the analytical needs of the Strategic Planning & Analysis Department.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Data Science, Data Analytics, Business Analytics, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, Geography, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Urban & Regional Planning, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of work experience which includes progressively responsible professional experience in data analysis required.
  • Excellent personal computer skills to include popular software for reporting, presentation, and database management required.
  • Strong, demonstrated skills in either Python, R, or SQL required. Willingness to learn Python required.
  • Ability to learn and apply statistical, predictive modeling, or other advanced analytical techniques required.
  • Strong analytical and statistical skills required.
  • Knowledge and experience with graphical representations of datasets required.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with varied audiences, both internal and external, required.
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau or Power BI required.
  • Experience with technical research methods and analysis required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and geospatial data and analyses preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with management of data analysis tools is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs data analysis, develop, prepare, and present statistical/analytical reports as required to a range of audiences both internal and external.
  • Prepares and processes daily and weekly reports for ridership and operational performance, ensuring adequate data quality of processed data, identify critical metrics and KPIs, and deliver actionable insights to relevant decision makers.
  • Provides management with reports that will track progress and efficiency on projects and provide the basis for decision making.
  • Responsible for statistical/analytical reports as required by the Planning Division.
  • Develops ideas into Tableau and/or PowerBI visualizations and dashboards to better understand ridership trends, geographies, service levels, seat availability, key performance indicators (KPI) etc.
  • Develops novel datasets from existing datasets and statistical models, with the direction and guidance of immediate manager, for use by other analysts throughout the Authority.
  • Performs analysis of performance standards to create new systems and revise established procedures.
  • Develops effective, graphical methods for communicating results of research, analysis, and corporate performance indicators with senior management, employees, stakeholders, and the general public.
  • Coordinates data collection from Automatic Passenger Counter (APC) and prepares reports on ridership and performance data including trend analysis of operational and ridership statistics from various data sources.
  • Provides primary analytical support to Strategic Planning & Analysis, Service Planning City and Suburban Schedules Sections, making recommendations to schedulers concerning routing and scheduling based upon analysis.
  • Responds to and fulfills requests for data and insights from within SEPTA, from partner agencies, from academic researchers, and from members of the press.
  • Supports data sharing across the Authority.
  • May assist with training other staff as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned/required.
