About The Position

Under general supervision, performs complex inspections and preventive maintenance/repairs on traffic signals, controllers, streetlights and pedestrian equipment. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, conducting daily inspections and performing complex preventive maintenance/repairs on traffic signals, pedestrian equipment, street lights and controllers. Inspects intersections for proper signal operations; operates specialized computer programs to provide signal timing changes; ensures proper timing is restored. Replaces defective equipment, including poles and electrical systems. Performs tests on electrical and electronic equipment, including traffic signal heads, pedestrian equipment, street lights, controllers, auxiliary equipment and other systems to ensure safe operations and compatibility. Responds to equipment damage and malfunctions; replaces, repairs, modifies or installs equipment. Repairs, replaces, modifies or installs circuitry, switches, fuses, timers and cabinet parts. Performs electrical system wiring and installation. Locates conduit, cables and other underground devices to perform work. Prepares daily reports of work activities. Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned. Employees may at any time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent; AND two years’ experience in traffic signal operations; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Signal Technician I and II certification.
  • Possession of a valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • Knowledge of City organization, operations, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of traffic signal system inspection and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of traffic signal and related device equipment operations.
  • Knowledge of traffic signal and related device equipment maintenance and repair practices and methods.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of general electronic and electrical maintenance, installation and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of electrical and electronic hardware and software systems.
  • Knowledge of Luminary street lights.
  • Knowledge of International Municipal Signal Association Manual.
  • Knowledge of Texas Uniform Traffic Control Devices Manual.
  • Knowledge of business and personal computers, and spreadsheet software applications.
  • Skill in handling situations requiring diplomacy, fairness, firmness and sound judgment.
  • Skill in estimating time, materials and equipment for work assignments.
  • Skill in operating motorized vehicles with specialized equipment.
  • Skill in using power and hand tools.
  • Skill in providing efficient customer service.
  • Skill in understanding and applying City policies and procedures.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with all levels within the City.
  • Skill in communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
