About The Position

AECOM is seeking a Senior Traffic Engineer – Supervising Traffic Engineer to be based in the Bay Area or in Sacramento, CA. This role involves leading traffic studies for projects in California and supporting West Coast regional projects. The position requires strong communication skills for interacting with colleagues, clients, regulatory agencies, and the public, as well as the ability to write clear technical reports. The engineer will support a variety of planning and preliminary engineering projects for different transportation infrastructure types and assist project managers with transportation plans, traffic safety, public involvement, and environmental compliance documents (CEQA and NEPA). Experience with FHWA, state, and local transportation planning, traffic, and environmental processes is essential. The role demands a self-motivated individual capable of multitasking, detail-oriented work, independent problem-solving, and effective time management, with a consistent delivery of high-quality work. Responsibilities include gathering and correlating engineering data, performing design calculations, analysis, value engineering, writing technical specifications, and creating project cost estimates. The engineer will also propose innovative solutions, implement current technology, and provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.

Requirements

  • Caltrans experience required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to discuss projects with co-workers, clients, regulatory agency staff, AECOM staff, and the public in meetings and at public events.
  • Ability to write concise and readable technical reports and documents.
  • Relevant experience in transportation planning, modeling, and engineering for multimodal transportation projects.
  • Support a wide range of planning and preliminary engineering projects for roadways, freeways, transit systems, managed lanes, and bicycle and pedestrian facilities.
  • Experience with FHWA, state, and local transportation planning, traffic, and environmental processes.
  • Must be highly self-motivated with the ability to successfully multi-task, perform detail-oriented work, work independently, and demonstrate effective time management skills.
  • Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office programs and other relevant software programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, and preferably Project).
  • Skilled in traffic simulation/modeling software, including Synchro/SimTraffic, VISSIM, HCS, and other platforms utilized by local agencies in California.
  • Must be highly self-motivated with the ability to successfully multi-task, perform detail-oriented work, work independently, demonstrate effective time management skills, and consistently deliver high-quality deliverables.
  • BA/BS + 6 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
  • Certified Engineer (PE/TE/PTOE) license in California, or the ability to obtain the license within 6 months.

  • Master's degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent.

  • Experience and familiarity with traffic operational analysis, including traffic projections, analysis, and simulation; traffic safety analysis; traffic signal warrants; traffic signal and pedestrian crossing control system analysis and design.
  • Experience and familiarity with ITS and technology projects following the systems engineering process and local client requirements.
  • The right balance of management and technical skills, and experience serving internal and external clients.
  • Familiarity with or knowledge of MicroStation, AutoCAD, Synchro, VISSIM, or other similar applications.

Responsibilities

  • Lead traffic studies for projects in California and support West Coast regional projects as needed.
  • Provide specialized technical input to studies and design for specific areas of expertise.
  • Develop study and design procedures to facilitate high-quality, cost-effective work by others.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary review of project deliverables.
  • Develop construction cost estimates and estimates of technical efforts for projects.
  • Use expertise in all steps of completing discipline components of PS&E packages.
  • Perform quality control review of design calculations or drawings.
  • Prepare technical specification sections.
  • Provide input to the development of engineering budgets and schedules to meet requirements.
  • Gather and correlate basic engineering data using established and well-defined procedures.
  • Work on detailed or routine engineering assignments involving design calculations, analysis, value engineering, writing technical specifications, and project cost estimates.
  • Propose approaches to solve new problems encountered, apply innovative design solutions, and implement current technology to meet project design needs.
  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and coaching to entry-level/junior engineers or technicians to help them improve their technical skills.
  • Perform work in accordance with agreed-upon budgets and schedules with little supervision.
  • Assist project managers on various projects involving transportation plans, traffic safety, and public involvement, and the overall preparation of CEQA and NEPA compliance documents.
