About The Position

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking a Senior Traffic Analysis Specialist (TE3) to lead and supervise a traffic analysis team within the Olympic Region Traffic Office in Lacey, WA. This role involves reviewing traffic studies from consultants, development projects, and local agencies for impacts on the state highway system. The position ensures highway construction projects comply with standards and specifications through technical leadership and adherence to WSDOT standards, policies, and engineering practices.

Requirements

  • Comprehensive knowledge and practical understanding of engineering principles, methods, and practices relevant to transportation projects.
  • Experience in design development, construction techniques, material testing procedures, and/or contract administration.
  • Experience preparing construction contract documents or working for a Design Builder in an engineering capacity.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate complex transportation and traffic analysis elements, identify issues, and develop effective alternative solutions.
  • Experience reviewing and applying traffic design and transportation engineering principles to support data-driven decision-making and project delivery.
  • Proficient in operating Windows-based computers and MS Office applications, including Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, and Word, as well as databases and computer-aided engineering software.
  • Skills to communicate technical and non-technical information clearly and effectively to diverse audiences, both virtually and in person, using a range of electronic communication methods such as email, telephone, text, video conferencing, and computer-based collaboration tools.
  • Skills to work productively both independently and as part of a team environment, prioritizing workload and handling multiple assignments, producing accurate and consistent results.
  • Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
  • Takes action to meet the needs of others.
  • Ability to travel on a regular, sporadic, or as needed basis, including overnight travel.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience preparing and/or reviewing traffic studies, including traffic impact analyses, transportation discipline reports for environmental documentation, and intersection control evaluations.
  • Demonstrated understanding of highway and traffic analysis principles, methodologies, and operational concepts.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard traffic analysis and modeling software such as Highway Capacity Software (HCS), Synchro 12/SimTraffic, SIDRA, and VISSIM, or similar tools used to evaluate and simulate transportation system performance.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute traffic models for regional transportation projects.
  • Perform detailed highway and work-zone capacity analyses.
  • Develop and evaluate design alternatives for lane configurations, intersection control types, and traffic operations.
  • Conduct capacity and operational analyses.
  • Prepare clear, professional engineering correspondence and technical documentation.
  • Develop and present supporting materials to effectively communicate technical findings.
  • Perform traffic model calibration checks and traffic volume balancing.
  • Review and evaluate traffic impact studies.
  • Assess transportation elements of planning and environmental documents.
  • Develop and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Provide traffic analysis support for maintenance of traffic and work zone traffic control for design-build projects.
  • Monitor major staged construction.
  • Provide training and guidance to Traffic Analysis Engineers (TE2), including distributing work, reviewing work prior to submission, and performing administrative supervisory duties.
