About The Position

We are seeking an experienced Senior Trademark & Copyright Counsel to support a critical global intellectual property function for one of the world’s most recognized healthcare organizations. In this highly visible, hands-on role with significant autonomy, you will manage global trademark and copyright matters for a portfolio of Johnson & Johnson’s MedTech businesses, spanning Cardiovascular, Surgery, and Vision. You will work closely with business leaders, brand and marketing teams, and legal colleagues to protect and strengthen our iconic brands worldwide. You will be a trusted advisor who exercises independent, seasoned judgment on complex matters and delivers practical solutions. You will report to the Assistant General Counsel, Trademark & Copyright Group Leader, MedTech. Requirements

  • Law degree from an ABA-accredited law school with excellent academic credentials, and admission to and in good standing with at least one state bar required.
  • A minimum of 8 years of trademark and copyright experience at a law firm and/or in-house legal department, with extensive experience in the areas of: trademark clearance, prosecution, and conflicts (domestic and international); copyright counseling, registration, and licensing; and trademark and copyright due diligence and transactions.
  • Extensive knowledge of domestic and international laws, regulations, and processes relating to trademark, copyright, and internet and domain name matters.
  • Proficiency with trademark searching and IP portfolio management software.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work as part of a team, as well as to work independently, make sound decisions with minimal supervision, take ownership of a portfolio, and balance competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex legal issues to non-lawyer business partners.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with copyright issues involving software, digital content, and/or AI is a plus.
  • Medical device, pharmaceutical, and/or healthcare products experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manages all aspects of trademark clearance, prosecution, maintenance, and enforcement, as well as copyright and internet/domain name matters, working with trademark and copyright paralegals and professionals.
  • Provides proactive, strategic trademark and copyright counseling to brand and marketing teams and other functional areas that support the business, balancing reasoned legal analysis with business needs.
  • Counsels on MedTech and broader enterprise copyright matters, including use and licensing of third-party content, and on issues related to emerging technologies such as generative AI.
  • Handles trademark and copyright conflicts and enforcement matters, including contentious proceedings before courts, trademark offices, and other government agencies worldwide, and management of outside counsel.
  • Provides trademark and copyright support for commercial initiatives and transactions, including due diligence for acquisitions and divestitures and the negotiation and drafting of a broad range of agreements (e.g., trademark, copyright, and software licenses, assignments, coexistence and consent agreements, co-branding, co-promotion, and distribution agreements, and content licenses).
  • Educates business partners on trademark and copyright best practices through training and guidance materials and contributes to the development of policies and processes to improve compliance and workflow.
  • Represents the Company, as appropriate, on external groups and organizations addressing trademark and copyright legislation and policy.
