About The Position

STV is seeking a Traction Power System Senior Engineer for its Rail Systems group within the Transportation and Infrastructure division. This role is open in multiple major Western office locations, including Phoenix, San Diego, Los Angeles, Oakland, Portland, Seattle, Salt Lake City, Denver, San Jose, and San Francisco. The Traction Power Engineer will be involved in the design of traction electrification projects, working as part of a team to develop electrical designs from concept through construction administration. Key activities include managing multiple projects, ensuring designs comply with company principles for manufacturing, assembly, and systems integration, and coordinating design efforts with various internal teams (architecture, engineering, manufacturing, systems, construction). The role also involves collaborating with other regional systems teams to standardize designs across STV projects, performing detailed modeling of electrical systems, and coordinating with other disciplines in a 3D construction environment.

Requirements

  • Supports and leads the semi-complex planning of detailed product development objectives.
  • Participates and leads in the preparation of semi-complex sketches, design layouts, and other specifications.
  • Provides support in semi-complex review of results to determine that products perform in the intended manner.
  • Participates and provides technical assistance on design feasibility.
  • Assists in standardizing semi-complex materials, components and assemblies.
  • Participates in maintaining detailed and comprehensive records of all inventive ideas, designs, and basic improvements.
  • Provides support in documenting product issues for future reference and problem resolution.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work with others, including multidisciplinary staff in different offices.
  • Traction power experience include but not necessarily limited to the following elements Electrical House, AC Medium Voltage Switchgear, Transformers, Rectifiers, DC Switchgear, overhead contact systems, electric charger technology for mass transit. This includes AC and DC single line diagrams, metering and relaying schemes, substation equipment layout, conduit and cable layout, equipment installation detail drawings, grounding grid layout, power distribution and lighting system design.
  • Experience with DC traction power system load flow studies and the development of traction power system designs based on load flow study results.
  • Knowledge of commercial AC power system analysis software (load flow, short circuit, relay coordination, grounding grid design).
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD or MicroStation platform.
  • Experience with BIM and Navisworks.
  • Project management and monitoring of project budgets.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Bachelors of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license is required. 20+ years of experience, in lieu of license, will be considered.
  • 20+ years of experience in the design/construction/testing traction substations and power distribution systems in the transit/railroad industry or electric utility sector.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of DC traction power system load flow analysis software is a plus.
  • Knowledge of project proposal preparation is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Work as member of team to develop electrical designs for traction electrification systems from concept through construction administration.
  • Manage multiple projects internally with different project teams.
  • Generating and help ensure designs are in compliant with the companies’ principles of design for manufacturing, assembly, and systems integration.
  • Coordinating design efforts with; and learning from architecture, engineering, manufacturing, systems, and construction teams.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with the other regional systems team to develop and maintain standards across all STV projects.
  • Works with engineering design group on the development of modelling tasks.
  • Perform detailed modelling of electrical systems which interface with other design disciplines which may including piping, ducting, and equipment.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines in a collaborative 3D construction environment.
