About The Position

Hatch is seeking a highly motivated Senior Traction Power Engineer to join their North American Infrastructure group in the Rail Systems team. This role is based in the Chicago, IL area, with other possible locations including Brooklyn, NY; Newark, NJ; Seattle, WA; Los Angeles, CA; and Ambler, PA. The ideal candidate is a results-driven engineering professional with excellent communication and teamwork skills, who is detail-oriented, organized, and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining high quality standards. The ability to work independently with minimal supervision is also important.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • 15 to 25 years of experience with dc traction power systems design, including the design of 600 to 1500 Volt dc rail transit traction power substations, ac and dc switchgear, transformers, rectifiers, and controls
  • Working knowledge of NFPA 70 is required and thorough understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and local codes

Nice To Haves

  • Professional engineer’s license or engineer-in-training certificate is an advantage
  • Experience with the North American transit/transportation industry is highly desirable
  • Relevant experience may be considered as a substitute for degree requirements
  • Load flow simulation software
  • Knowledge of power systems analysis
  • Experience in factory testing, field testing and commissioning of traction power equipment
  • Experience in protective relaying
  • Experience in medium voltage switchgear application-design and specification
  • Knowledge of railway overhead catenary/third rail distribution systems

Responsibilities

  • Lead a group of junior electrical engineers to develop traction power design packages
  • Design traction power substations, feeder and equipment sizing, site plans, duct bank and conduit layouts, grounding systems, and auxiliary power supply systems and control circuits
  • Coordinate with other engineers for systems integration and design
  • Perform load flow simulations and prepare reports
  • Develop documents including specifications, drawings and cost estimates
  • Review project submittments and requests for information from contractors
  • Provide installation, testing and commissioning support to clients
  • Management of traction power projects
