Senior Thermal Engineer

BLUE ORIGIN•Quinte West, WA
•$133,500 - $203,263

About The Position

At Blue Origin, this role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a reusable heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle designed to carry people and payloads. As part of a small engineering and analysis team, the Senior Thermal Engineer supports thermal and fluid system design across New Glenn spaceflight systems throughout their lifecycle, from concept and configuration through flight operations and sustaining engineering. The role is analysis-intensive and includes integrating customer-provided payload thermal models and generating thermal predictions for payloads and the payload compartment during launch and ascent, while supporting analyses across all phases of flight. The engineer applies aerothermal, radiative, and natural environments to integrated vehicle thermal models. Serving as the focal point for thermal analysis requests from customers and internal teams, the role defines analysis scope, assumptions, and deliverables, and provides integrated analyses that inform design, verification, and mission decisions. The engineer builds, maintains, and configuration-manages integrated thermal models, inputs, and results; documents analyses in formal reports and data books; reviews and critiques models and results from other engineers; and mentors junior team members.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • At least 5 years of experience in thermal or thermodynamic analysis.
  • Demonstrated expertise with Thermal Desktop and SINDA/FLUINT.
  • Demonstrated experience developing integrated thermal models of space or launch vehicles.
  • Experience reviewing and critiquing models and results developed by junior engineers.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • At least 10 years of experience in thermal or thermodynamic analysis.
  • Demonstrated expertise with ANSYS Mechanical APDL.
  • Experience analyzing satellites, spacecraft, and/or launch vehicle upper-stage systems.
  • Experience with payload integration, including payload thermal model exchange and interface requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to automate analysis workflows using MATLAB and/or Python, with Git for version control.
  • Working knowledge of 3D CAD tools; Creo is preferred.
