Senior Test Engineer, Performance & Automation

EdgeBeam WirelessBoston, MA
$140,000 - $170,000Onsite

About The Position

EdgeBeam is seeking a Senior Test Engineer, Performance & Automation to join their growing team. This role is crucial for building a robust test platform, expanding into UI testing, and adopting agentic development workflows. The position involves two main responsibilities: establishing performance testing as a new discipline within EdgeBeam, including tooling, baselines, and gates, and significantly increasing automated functional coverage across the vector platform and device software. The engineer will collaborate with existing automation efforts using Playwright and integrate with the new ReportPortal + Xray stack, setting the standard for performance and load testing practices.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of test engineering experience, with at least 3 years focused on performance and load testing of distributed backend systems.
  • Hands-on expertise with K6 (preferred) and JMeter, including scripting, parameterization, results interpretation, and CI integration.
  • Strong automation skills in Playwright (or a comparable modern framework) for API and UI testing, with JavaScript/TypeScript fluency.
  • Solid understanding of HTTP, REST, WebSockets, and common failure modes under load (e.g., connection pool exhaustion, GC pressure, tail latency, backpressure).
  • Experience defining SLOs, baselining, and gating builds based on performance regressions.
  • Comfort working in AWS and observing systems through logs, metrics, and traces.
  • Proficiency with Git, GitHub Actions, and a working knowledge of Jira and test case management.
  • An AI-first mindset and the ability to solve and implement solutions using AI.

Nice To Haves

  • Wireless, broadcast, telecom, or embedded device test experience.
  • Experience with ReportPortal and Xray.

Responsibilities

  • Build out the performance test system from scratch, including tooling selection, environment setup, baselines, and the workflow for returning results to engineering.
  • Author and maintain performance, load, soak, and stress tests against the vector platform APIs and device software using K6 (preferred) and/or JMeter.
  • Expand automated functional test coverage in Playwright across the vector platform and device software, ensuring disciplined selector hygiene and Jira-linked test cases.
  • Integrate performance tests into GitHub Actions and ReportPortal, defining SLOs and regression thresholds for build failures.
  • Partner with engineering on data-testid conventions, AC-driven test design, and Outside-In TDD for new features.
  • Triage performance regressions and functional failures, collaborating with development to identify root causes and ensure resolution.
  • Mentor junior testers on automation patterns, test strategy, and performance fundamentals.
  • Assist in shaping the team's adoption of AI-assisted test authoring and triage, maintaining a human-in-the-loop review process.
