Senior Technician Fiber Optic Process

Monarch Quantum•San Diego, CA

About The Position

Join Monarch Quantum’s fast-paced, collaborative team as a Senior Engineering Technician focused on optical fiber processes. This hands-on role supports the development, optimization, and scaling of fiber-handling and integration processes that affect product performance, reliability, and manufacturability. The technician works closely with optical fiber process development engineers and operates at the intersection of research and development and manufacturing. The role supports fiber preparation and integration, photonic assembly, process development, and the transition of processes from development into pilot and early-stage production. Access to export-controlled information is required, and employment is contingent on the applicant being a U.S. person as defined by 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3).

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree, or high school diploma with equivalent experience in a pertinent environment.
  • At least 3 years of demonstrated hands-on expertise with fiber processes in a production or R&D environment.
  • Hands-on experience with fiber handling and processing in a laboratory or manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of fiber cleaving, stripping, and preparation techniques across a range of fiber types.
  • Experience with fusion splicing, including polarization-maintaining fiber alignment and loss optimization.
  • Knowledge of fiber end capping and high-power handling considerations.
  • Experience with fiber inspection methods such as microscopy, interferometry, or equivalent methods.
  • Strong understanding of contamination control and cleaning methods.
  • Experience with fiber alignment and optical coupling.
  • Ability to work effectively in laboratory and cleanroom environments.
  • Must be a U.S. person as defined by 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3), because the position requires access to export-controlled information.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with high-power fiber or laser systems.
  • Strong documentation and communication skills.
  • Experience with active alignment systems.
  • Exposure to reliability testing such as thermal cycling, HTOL, or damp heat.
  • Ability to train junior technicians or operators.
  • Experience leading build efforts for critical prototypes or customer deliverables.
  • Ability to provide feedback on design for manufacturability (DFM).
  • Experience quantifying splice loss, return loss, and polarization extinction ratio (PER) for PM fibers.
  • Experience using optical test equipment such as an optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) and power meters.
  • Basic data analysis skills using Excel or JMP.

Responsibilities

  • Support development and execution of fiber-centric processes, including precision fiber cleaving, stripping, preparation, fusion splicing, end capping, handling, cleaning, contamination control, and inspection.
  • Support photonic assembly and integration, including fiber-to-device coupling and alignment, integrating fibers into packages, and attaching optics such as lenses, isolators, and fiber arrays.
  • Execute design of experiments (DOE) to improve optical performance, yield, and repeatability.
  • Follow process flows, work instructions, and travelers.
  • Troubleshoot optical loss, fiber damage, and process variability.
  • Support transition of processes from development into pilot and early-stage production.
  • Support tooling, fixturing, and automation strategies for fiber handling.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Fidelity 401(k) plan with 4% employer matching.
  • 20 paid time off (PTO) days per year.
  • 13 paid company holidays.
  • 9/80 work schedule, with every other Friday off.
