About The Position

We value innovation, team collaboration, and meaningful work. Our tax practice operates in pods, which are small teams led by a Tax Manager, senior associates, and associates. Seniors are the core of a pod, responsible for producing client work, ensuring quality, and mentoring associates. This role offers the opportunity to grow from preparing returns to shaping them, involving planning ideas, research, client relationships, and mentoring. BW&O CPAs is committed to supporting employees on their path to licensure, with exam fees reimbursed and a bonus upon passing the CPA or EA exam, alongside a defined timeline for achieving these goals. The role emphasizes real ownership of returns, deadlines, personal development, and team mentorship, with a clear path toward review and management responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in accounting or finance
  • 3–5 years of experience providing tax compliance and consulting services in public accounting, or an appropriate balance of education and work experience
  • Eligible to sit for the CPA exam and actively working toward a CPA or EA license
  • Strong understanding of accounting and tax rules
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Available to work evenings and weekends during peak tax season on an as-needed basis

Nice To Haves

  • CPA license, EA, or law license
  • Advanced degree in tax or accounting
  • Intuit Lacerte tax software experience
  • Experience with any of the following: affordable housing, Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC), HUD, real estate and developers, partnerships, housing authorities, exempt organizations, trusts, or high-net-worth individuals and family groups.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare individual, S corporation, partnership, exempt organizations, and trust returns accurately and ahead of deadline, with workpapers that reviewers can trust and minimized compliance risk.
  • Interpret financial data, monitor client trends, and identify tax planning and optimization opportunities for managers and clients.
  • Research changes in tax legislation and their implications for clients, contribute to research projects, and help draft responses to tax authorities.
  • Mentor associates by being a first point of contact for questions and helping them develop compliance and strategy instincts.
  • Build client relationships through clear and professional communication, anticipating needs, and delivering exceptional service.
  • Manage concurrent deadlines and shifting priorities, hitting internal firm deadlines without prompting.
  • Take ownership of workload and performance metrics visible in Karbon.
  • Prepare returns that hold up.
