About The Position

Sun Life embraces a hybrid work model that balances in-office collaboration with the flexibility of virtual work in the contiguous states plus AK. The opportunity: Working within the US tax department of a large Canadian-based financial services company, the Senior Tax Analyst/ Tax Manager performs advanced or specialized work, which requires a comprehensive knowledge of accounting theory and principles as well as solid U.S. income tax knowledge. The successful candidate will become the technical level of professional, will develop a thorough knowledge of the organization's systems and be able to proactively identify opportunities to modernize and transform tax processes, including redesigning workflows and leveraging technology to improve accuracy, efficiency, and scalability, in addition to modifying or developing new procedures to meet specialized needs. Success in this role will be measured not only by accuracy and timeliness of deliverables, but also by the individual’s ability to simplify, automate, and scale tax processes through data and technology.

Requirements

  • 3–7 years of experience in corporate tax, tax technology, or tax transformation, including exposure to tax provision (ASC 740) and/or U.S. income tax compliance.
  • Experience with tax systems, automation, or process improvement initiatives is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or the equivalent is required.
  • Deep understanding of federal and state compliance.
  • Experience with tax technology tools (e.g. Checkpoint, OneSource, Longview, etc.) and financial applications (e.g., PAM, Oracle, SAP, Tableau, AI-Copilot etc.), including participation in system implementations, enhancements, or process optimization initiatives; ability to partner with IT or vendors to improve solutions is a plus
  • Ability to work with large, complex data sets and translate financial and tax data into actionable insights
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are critical.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to partner across teams to drive change and support adoption of new technologies, processes, and ways of working in an evolving tax function
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a detail-oriented mindset is necessary to be successful.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications (e.g. Excel and Word) is essential

  • Advanced degrees in taxation and/or a CPA is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review complex federal and state income tax returns and provisions, including oversight of fixed assets and tax depreciation processes, with a focus on improving accuracy, standardization, and efficiency across entities
  • Drive tax process and technology transformation initiatives, including identifying automation opportunities, improving data flows, redesigning workflows, and enhancing reporting and operational efficiency across the tax function
  • Lead or contribute to tax technology initiatives, including implementation, enhancement, or optimization of tax and finance systems
  • Research US tax theory, apply rules to specific domestic and cross-border transactions, and summarize conclusions in non-technical terms.
  • Ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley internal control requirements.
  • Interact with personnel from all areas of the Company, both in the US and Internationally, in order to obtain and understand complex financial data.
  • Assist in responding to inquiries from federal and state tax auditors.
  • Provide support and a point of contact for external auditors.
  • Provide support and effectively manage the internal audit process.
  • Assist with forecasting and projections both for scenario testing/quarterly deliverables
  • Assist in international reporting (5471, 5472, etc.) and partnership returns
  • Review tax accounts reconciliations.
  • Processing intercompany tax payments and other intercompany reporting.
  • Prepare tax provisions in Longview software, including consolidation of US data.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual Federal and SALT income tax provisions for life entities for IFRS and NAIC financial statements.
  • Prepare separate tax provisions and notes for U.S. GAAP and statutory financial statements and assist with related financial statement audits
  • Assist with external audit
  • Assist managing financial reporting interaction with Corporate Tax, U.S. Finance and other business units
