About The Position

The State and Local Tax Senior Analyst ("SALT Senior") applies state and local tax knowledge in assisting with state and local tax audits, aiding in tax decisions, identifying tax planning opportunities and risks, and implementing tax planning. This individual researches various state tax issues to arrive at the most advantageous and proper treatment under the tax law and documents the analysis and conclusions. The SALT Senior reviews state tax returns and supporting schedules to confirm that the appropriate positions are taken, assists with the corporate-wide state income/franchise, property tax, and transaction tax issues, and drafts a wide range of state and local tax memoranda. Stays abreast of state and local tax developments and informs team members of the same.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 3-years of experience in state sales/use and/or income/franchise tax consulting and planning, or 4-years of overall experience including 2-years with a large public accounting or tax consulting firm in a similar role
  • Gathers data, formulates position statements, coordinates, or negotiates with respect to examinations by state tax authorities.
  • In-depth knowledge of state tax laws, rules, and regulations
  • Excellent research, analysis, and writing/verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively with minimal supervision
  • Proven ability to collaborate and foster relationships within the Tax team and with key functions such as Accounting, FP&A, Legal, and Treasury
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising administrative personnel and interns in alignment with organizational needs

Responsibilities

  • Investigates and resolves technical state tax issues, including those related to tax returns, planning strategies, and examinations by state tax authorities; gathers data, formulates position statements, and coordinates or negotiates during audits.
  • Assists with the implementation of complex state tax planning strategies and addresses a broad range of related issues, leveraging technical knowledge to identify opportunities to minimize the company's state tax burden.
  • Reviews tax workpapers, schedules, reports, and correspondence, as well as state tax returns and payments, to ensure compliance and proper accounting for state income taxes.
  • Researches complex state tax matters to determine the most appropriate and advantageous treatment under applicable laws, including preparation of supporting memoranda (e.g., ASC 740).
