About The Position

We are looking for a senior tax accountant at our central mining office in Brookwood, AL. The senior tax accountant assists in directing all tax functions of the corporation including tax planning, research, preparation, compliance and litigation; to collaborate with management on planned transactions including mergers and acquisitions; to develop methods of reporting to minimize tax risk and maximize tax savings opportunities; to assist in overseeing and interpreting international, federal and state tax laws; to interface, negotiate and settle disputes with external auditors and tax authorities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Business Administration or Finance.
  • Minimum of 2 years progressive corporate tax experience.
  • Must be skilled at research with advanced understanding of international and multi-jurisdiction income, transactional and regulations for a large public corporation.
  • Requires ability to work effectively with and through management in various locations on a wide range of issues.
  • Must be client oriented and exhibit willingness and ability to advise and assist on all tax matters within the company.
  • Requires high degree of detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage tax department staff worldwide and direct workload with fixed deadlines is critical.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA designation preferred.
  • MBA, Master of Law (LLM) in Taxation or law degree desired.

Responsibilities

  • ASC 740 Accounting for Income Taxes. Provides Accounting and Internal Audit departments with tax accounting details and information for financial forecasts, year-end closing, and disclosure purposes.
  • Income Tax Compliance. Assists in tax compliance activities throughout the corporation to meet all international federal, state, local and foreign tax laws, and tax filling due dates. Work with third-party firms to prepare returns and with tax authorities to ensure compliance with regulators.
  • Tax Planning. Makes recommendations on short and long tax planning initiatives to place the company in the most efficient tax posture.
  • Tax Internal Controls. Assist in ensuring appropriate tax internal controls under SOX 404 (Section 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002) including internal control testing, remediation, documentation, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Tax Strategy. Actively participates in due diligence and other activities associated with acquisitions, liquidations, corporate structuring, stock offerings and debt restructuring to create the most tax efficient transactions for the company.
  • Tax Advice. Assist Tax Director in providing tax advice to corporate departments and business units, assists business units resolving tax-related questions and issues preparing tax reporting packages (i.e., depreciation, R&D, etc.)
  • Sales and Use Tax Compliance. Prepare monthly Use tax calculation from tax engine, prepare monthly Sales and Use tax returns, proactively manage monthly Sales return compliance and procurement to ensure efficient and correct tax is paid to appropriate jurisdictions
  • Business Personal Property Reporting. Prepare all business personal property tax reports to ensure they are accurate and coordinate with Engineering departments on proper treatment reporting for large projects., in conjunction with the legal departments, appeals assessments when appropriate.
  • Tax Incentives. Work with outside counsel to obtain income and non-income tax incentives. Coordinate with operations to identify areas for area for application. File exemption request for vendors to obtain abatement benefits. File project status reports with local counites on tax incentive projects.
  • Unclaimed Property. Identify unclaimed property held by Company, prepare due diligence letters and appropriate state unclaimed property reports.
  • Intercompany Debt. Calculate intercompany debt expense between subsidiaries. Identify appropriate timing of dividend distributions and equity transfers of subsidiaries.
  • Investor Compliance. Monitor investor stock transactions to ensure compliance with Charter restriction. Contact investors as needed to confirm compliance.
  • Work with outside Tax History. Maintains tax history, documentation and records for appropriate prescribed statutory time periods.
  • Industry Groups and Associations. Participates in industry groups and associations to stay abreast of recent tax development and tax law changes, interprets and analyzes changing regulations, identifies areas requiring modifications and sets up required programs as needed. Advises management of any major impacts.
  • May be required to travel to other Company sites, external meetings, conferences, etc.
  • Significant increase in workload during tax compliance season, quarterly accounting close and SEC reporting which requires working additional hours/days as needed.
  • Improve safety standards by holding safety meetings, conducting safety interactions, and taking corrective action where required.
  • Ensure adherence to State, Federal and Company workplace policies and standard work procedures for risk identification, risk control.
  • Maintain a high level of Safety performance through effective communication, monitoring, and revision of standard work procedures.
  • Identify and report safety risks, accidents, incidents, injuries, and property damage at the workplace.
  • Attend and participate in all scheduled safety meetings and training.
  • Investigate accidents and near misses with a view toward positive action, through training, equipment set-up or equipment repair and report on findings and conclusions.
  • Maintain environmental awareness amongst the workforce by holding meetings and involving the environmental department in related subjects.
  • Ensure adherence to environmental policy, work standards, management plans and regulatory obligations and requirements.
  • Integrate environmental policies, programs, and practices into all activities of the organization.
