About The Position

GFT is seeking a Senior Systems Safety Engineer to join their Practice or CBG Team in Ontario, Alberta, or British Columbia. The role involves working on transformative transportation projects that enhance infrastructure and improve community connectivity. The team focuses on resilient, sustainable design and construction, delivering innovative solutions for modern, multimodal roadway systems to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable travel. The Senior Safety Engineer will lead safety assurance and certification activities for major rail transit projects, acting as a technical authority on safety matters, including hazard management, safety engineering, safety assurance, and regulatory compliance. A strong understanding of safety engineering methodologies and RAM principles is required to coordinate integrated RAMS activities. The position requires interfacing with clients, regulators, assessors, and stakeholders, leading contractor safety reviews, and ensuring integration of safety activities with other engineering disciplines. Mentoring junior engineers and supporting business development are also key aspects of the role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science, or related STEM discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Canada highly desirable.

Nice To Haves

  • 15+ years of experience in system safety engineering.
  • Experienced IEC 61508 and/or EN 50126 practitioner.
  • Skilled at dissecting complex stakeholder needs and articulating an assurance case based on reasoned logic and well-rounded judgement.
  • Experience leading the execution of safety management programmes, and supporting Independent Safety Assessments.
  • Working knowledge of RAM principles and RAM analyses.
  • Strong client-facing and stakeholder management skills.
  • Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary technical teams.

Responsibilities

  • Lead project safety programs and safety assurance activities.
  • Define project safety plans and safety management processes.
  • Lead hazard identification, risk assessments, and hazard management processes.
  • Lead preparation and review of Safety Cases and Safety Assurance Reports.
  • Act as technical lead for safety certification programs.
  • Establish safety requirements and acceptance criteria.
  • Interface directly with clients, regulators, assessors, and project stakeholders.
  • Lead contractor safety reviews and acceptance activities.
  • Ensure integration of safety activities with systems engineering, integration, testing, and RAM programs.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership.
  • Support business development and proposal activities.
  • Serve as trusted advisor on safety matters for clients and project teams.
