Senior Systems Engineer, Mission Platforms

Muon Space•San Jose, CA
•$201,000 - $220,000

About The Position

Muon Space seeks a Senior Systems Engineer to join its Mission Engineering team as the lead systems engineer for the end-to-end mission capability baseline for scalable mission platforms. The role takes an “Outside-In” systems integration approach, assembling reusable building blocks for families of missions and defining unified baselines spanning hardware, flight software, ground-segment interfaces, and mission operations. The engineer coordinates upstream with Business Development and Mission Architecture to align platform baselines with emerging opportunities and help shape future business areas. Downstream, the role connects spacecraft platform, flight software, ground software, and operations teams, while maintaining awareness of product roadmaps across Power, GNC, Instruments, Propulsion, and Avionics. The role establishes integrated end-to-end performance baselines so Mission Lead Systems Engineers can focus on mission-specific changes rather than rebuilding core architecture. Success requires tailoring analysis and processes to system maturity and risk, adapting to changing demands and schedules, and communicating technical information effectively to diverse audiences. The position also requires access to export-controlled information; applicants must meet the stated U.S. export-control eligibility requirements.

Requirements

  • M.S. or higher degree in an engineering field.
  • At least 6 years of experience working in a multidisciplinary environment; spacecraft systems, payload integration, and mission operations exposure is preferred.
  • Experience moving organizations from custom, one-off engineering projects toward standardized product-line engineering and reusable architectures.
  • Extensive experience with assembly, integration, and test (AI&T) workflows and verification and validation strategies, balancing technical risk with agile business constraints.
  • Ability to align senior cross-functional stakeholders without direct reporting authority.
  • Deep understanding of space vehicle dynamic behavior, fault management, and spacecraft flight and operations to meet strict service-level agreements.
  • Proven history of system integration and delivery of complex, software-intensive systems.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and coordination skills.
  • Ability to rapidly change roles and responsibilities in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Must satisfy the stated export-control eligibility requirements to access export-controlled information.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a lead systems engineer or technical stakeholder in an agile environment.
  • Software skills in Python or Julia.
  • Remote-sensing instrument experience across multiple modalities, such as optical, multispectral, or RF, and associated data pipelines.
  • Strong working knowledge of the end-to-end space-to-ground data pipeline, including spacecraft command and data handling, onboard data management, downlink prioritization, and interfaces to downstream data-processing pipelines.
  • Familiarity with requirements-management and systems-modeling tools, and software-engineering processes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead definition and integration of the holistic mission platform baseline, ensuring operational requirements are met across hardware, software, payloads, and mission operations.
  • Partner with Business Development and Product Management to define end-to-end technical roadmaps for spacecraft platform families.
  • Establish, document, and release standardized platform capability baselines that integrate hardware, software, and operations for inheritance by Mission Lead Systems Engineers.
  • Coordinate strategic integration with spacecraft platform, flight software, ground software, and operations domain leads; manage integrated end-to-end mission system requirements while partnering with domain authorities.
  • Execute system-level simulation and analysis, including in verification and validation campaigns, to close resource budgets and confirm platform performance meets specifications.
  • Track avionics and subsystem roadmaps to ensure capabilities are delivered on schedules that support the operational platform baseline.
  • Own platform-level requirements, verification and validation, and performance baselines; maximize fleet commonality and work with Mission Lead Systems Engineers to determine when mission-specific tailoring is warranted.
  • Shape fault-management architectures and operational concepts to reduce operator workload and meet service-level agreement requirements at scale.
  • Ensure end-to-end space-to-ground data pipeline integration, from onboard command and data handling, storage, and downlink prioritization through ground ingest, processing, and delivery, meeting data latency and integrity requirements.
  • Promote a platform- and product-line-first approach, driving decisions about what belongs in the baseline versus as a mission-specific option.
  • Drive systems standardization by creating reusable requirements, specifications, and documentation for the spacecraft fleet.
