The Mainframe Storage Engineer is responsible for supporting and optimizing Walmart’s enterprise mainframe storage infrastructure across complex, high availability parallel sysplex environments. This role manages storage pools, virtual tape, disaster recovery processes, and IBM storage technologies that support mission critical workloads at large scale. The engineer works closely with mainframe systems, capacity planning, operations, and application teams to ensure resilience, performance, and operational excellence. Responsibilities include managing storage pools (adding volumes, cleanup, reclaiming unused volumes), providing expert support for space allocation and usage optimization, administering and maintaining IBM DS8K storage systems, supporting multiple large-scale parallel sysplex environments with data sharing, and performing system initialization, performance tuning, and subsystem optimization. The role also involves supporting virtual tape operations (ideally with Luminex experience), working with DFHSM for hierarchical storage management, and utilizing tools like FDR and MVSRM for backup, recovery, and storage resource management. The engineer will support IBM GDPS environments (Metro Mirror, Global Mirror, Metro-Global Mirror, Hyperswap), participate in Disaster Recovery planning, testing, and execution, and maintain DR readiness. Further duties include installing, upgrading, and maintaining IBM and third-party mainframe storage-related products, performing SMPE installation and maintenance, using IBM utilities (DB2, IMS), and utilizing JCL, TSO, and mainframe scripting (Rexx, CLIST).
