About The Position

The Electric Engineering department ensures all aspects of electric engineering, including standards, process safety, design, instrumentation, controls, undergrounding, regulatory compliance, and investment planning, are in place to safely enable a strategic and stable workplan for Electric Operations partners. This organization is responsible for program planning, financial budgeting, and project execution and delivery of all electric engineering projects, comprising approximately 2,000 coworkers. This is a senior-level engineer position requiring mastery of journey engineer duties and responsibility for complex system protection tasks. The role requires minimal training, direction, and review from more senior engineers and peers. The engineer will provide technical protection engineering for routine and complex projects, as well as maintenance and operation support, including issuing protection requirements, relay and automatic settings, processing clearances, and investigating relay operations. This position is represented by the Engineers and Scientists of California (ESC) and is subject to collective bargaining.

Requirements

  • BS Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited curriculum in the US or the equivalent from outside the US
  • 8 years of experience in the electric system protection

Responsibilities

  • Perform protection work on large and complex projects
  • Coach, direct, and assist technical employees and teams. May act as team leader
  • Performs root cause analysis and makes recommendations to address local and system-wide implications under emergencies
  • Mentor lower-level protection engineers
  • Resolves problems of complex scope. Assignments may provide an opportunity for creative or non-standard approaches.
  • Under general direction, plans work independently to meet assigned general objectives. Work may be reviewed upon completion; solution may provide an opportunity for creative/non-standard approaches.
  • To implement various aspects of the above job requirements, will work with all levels of personnel to obtain cooperation, persuade, exchange and/or provide information.
  • Lead and/or attend meetings representing the group to perform job duties.
  • External contacts may be limited primarily to obtaining, exchanging and providing information to vendors, manufacturers, other utilities, and consultants on nonroutine issues.
  • May participate in professional affiliations (e.g., PSRC, IEEE) to keep abreast of new industry trends, developments, and procedures.
  • May represent the company on committees.
