Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in construction-related assignments/roles, with a focus on construction and maintenance.
  • Proven experience in a supervisory role, managing people and schedules, preferably within a unionized environment with understanding of union contracts and provisions.
  • Strong knowledge of safety regulations and industry standards related to transmission line operations.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Transmission and Distribution systems, to include: Clearance & Control, ability to read and understand Operating Diagrams and Construction prints and Electrical Hazards Awareness.
  • Excellent communication (both verbal and written), leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and make decisions under the pressures of customer outages, changing conditions and always keeping our customers’ interests at the forefront of our decision-making.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates (AS) or Bachelors (BS) degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Equivalent experience/time in a construction or maintenance role is also highly valued and will be given consideration for the role.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily activities of line crews engaged in maintenance, construction projects, emergency response, and right-of-way maintenance.
  • Primarily oversee Local Union 97 Transmission Line Mechanics and Equipment Operators, but also involve oversight of contracted personnel, including Line Clearing, Civil Road Building, Foundation Drilling, Transmission Line, Matting, Vegetation and Environmental resources.
  • Ensure all work is performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all national grid and regulatory standards.
  • Lead a team of linemen, coordinate tasks, and support the overall objectives of the Transmission Line Services department.
  • Directly supervise Local Union 97 Line workers and equipment operators, providing guidance and performance feedback while fostering a safe and positive work environment.
  • Oversee daily maintenance, construction, and right-of-way activities, ensuring timely and budget-compliant completion.
  • Assist in planning and coordinating tasks, allocating resources effectively for maintenance and construction projects.
  • Lead emergency response efforts (115 kV and above, in both blue sky and/or storm scenarios) associated with Transmission assets, ensuring crews are prepared to address outages and/or incidents promptly.
  • Coordinate and communicate with Transmission Control Center staff, Environmental personnel and all affected stakeholders.
  • Support local Electric Distribution Operations (EDO) efforts (69 kV and below, in both blue sky and/or storm scenarios) with available Transmission Line resources (linemen and/or equipment operators) to address outages and/or incidents in a timely fashion.
  • Support local EDO efforts (69 kV and below, in weather-related emergencies) by serving as a Distribution Restoration Crew Supervisor when available and after all Divisional Transmission Storm Response responsibilities have been appropriately addressed and restored.
  • Implement and enforce safety protocols, conduct regular safety meetings and training sessions, and document Effective Safety Discussions and Compliance Assessments.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed and provide updates on operational performance and project progress.
  • Work with other supervisors and departments to ensure effective communication and coordination with external stakeholders as needed.
  • Travel daily to job sites and right-of-way locations and work in year-round weather conditions typical of Upstate New York seasons.
  • Be available for emergency response reporting outside of regular working hours (0700-1330), including weekends and holidays.
