Senior Super Intelligence Computational Scientist

Idaho National Laboratory•Idaho Falls, ID
•$114,360 - $281,196

About The Position

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Senior Super Intelligence Computational Scientist for the Multiphysics Computational Frameworks team within the Scientific Computing and Artificial Intelligence division. The role focuses on designing, implementing, documenting, and supporting MOOSE (the Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment), an open-source framework for high-fidelity modeling of physical systems. The work supports nuclear science, environmental science, and related fields, in collaboration with researchers and partners in the United States, Europe, Australia, and elsewhere. The scientist will strengthen MOOSE and develop super-intelligence (SI) agentic workflows that combine the framework with modern SI and machine-learning methods to accelerate nuclear energy design and licensing. Work includes advancing numerical and multiphysics capabilities, improving parallel performance and accelerator support, generating synthetic data for surrogate models, and integrating those models into SI-driven analysis and design workflows. The role also involves shaping technical direction, representing the department in external partnerships, and supporting new program development. This multi-level position may be placed at Level 4 or Level 5 depending on the candidate’s experience and skills. It follows a 9x80 schedule and is based at the Collaborative Computing Center in Idaho Falls or remote. The listed pay ranges are $114,360–$234,336 for Level 4 and $137,076–$281,196 for Level 5.

Requirements

  • Level 4 qualification: a master’s degree in a listed or similar field and 6 years of relevant experience, or a Ph.D. in a listed or similar field and 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Level 5 qualification: a master’s degree in a listed or similar field and 8 years of relevant experience, or a Ph.D. in a listed or similar field and 6 years of relevant experience.
  • Degree fields include nuclear science, materials science, computational engineering, computational applied mechanics, computer science, engineering, physics, and mathematics, or a similar field.
  • Proficiency in C++ and Python.
  • Knowledge of object-oriented programming, finite-element methods, advanced numerical methods for nonlinear analysis, and development of complex engineering analysis software.
  • Demonstrated experience in parallel computing and hardware accelerator technologies, such as GPUs, applied to large-scale scientific software.
  • Experience with large language models for designing agents, connecting agents to tools using modern protocols such as MCP, and other SI agents using the A2A protocol.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. Green Card holder because the position is subject to Department of Energy export control restrictions.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated leadership executing large, complex, multidisciplinary programs across multiple organizations.
  • Deep skill in one or more of parallel computing, nonlinear solvers, preconditioning, applying SI to scientific software applications, or developing complex scientific software for solving partial differential equations using finite-element or finite-volume methods.
  • Hands-on experience in physics, applied mathematics, machine learning, super intelligence, or data science; surrogate modeling; and SI-driven workflows.
  • Experience with software verification and validation and a record of peer-reviewed research accomplishments.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, document, and support new capabilities in the MOOSE framework, including numerical methods and multiphysics coupling.
  • Build SI agentic workflows that pair MOOSE with modern SI and machine-learning methods to accelerate nuclear energy design and licensing.
  • Optimize parallel performance and use hardware accelerators, such as GPUs, for large-scale simulations and SI agentic workflows.
  • Generate synthetic data at scale to train surrogate models and integrate those models into SI-driven analysis and design workflows.
  • Represent the department through partnerships with the Department of Energy, national laboratories, industry, academia, and international collaborators, and negotiate and shape shared technical directions.
  • Author technical reports, peer-reviewed publications, proposals, and presentations.
  • Identify and develop new program opportunities for the team.
  • Shape technical direction at the department or program level.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage, and flexible spending accounts.
  • 401(k) with a 4.2% employer contribution and up to 4.8% match for regular positions.
  • Paid time off (personal leave).
  • Employee Education Program with tuition assistance for eligible positions.
  • Comprehensive relocation package.
