Senior Substation Engineer
About The Position
Join our Power Systems Department as a Senior Substation Engineer and play a pivotal role in delivering advanced solutions for a wide variety of clients, including energy-intensive industries like semiconductor manufacturing, municipal entities, data center mega campuses, and pioneers in renewable energy. This role offers the opportunity to shape strategy and contribute to an agile team's rich pipeline of projects, with growth horizons in cutting-edge domains like HVDC, solar photovoltaics, and offshore wind. As the Senior Substation Engineer, you will be the technical anchor and subject matter expert for medium and high voltage substation design projects, leading engineering efforts from concept and feasibility through detailed design and construction support. The role combines hands-on engineering with mentorship and technical leadership, aiming to elevate the quality of our substation practice while delivering on challenging, high-profile projects.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology; Master's degree a plus
- 8+ years of progressive experience in substation engineering and design, with demonstrated ability to lead technical efforts on complex projects
- Strong working knowledge of medium and high voltage equipment, substation layout, protection and control systems, and applicable industry codes and standards (NEC, NESC, ANSI/IEEE)
- Proficiency in engineering calculation software for short circuit, protection coordination, and arc flash analysis (such as ETAP, SKM, or EasyPower)
- Experience with Autodesk AutoCAD, Revit MEP, or Microstation for substation design and documentation
- Strong communication and client-facing skills, with the ability to explain technical positions clearly to varied audiences
Nice To Haves
- Professional Engineering (PE) license, or active pursuit of licensure, is strongly preferred
- Experience with utility interconnection requirements and standards is a plus
- Substation Protection Engineering or Substation Control and Integration experience is highly valued
Responsibilities
- Lead and perform electrical engineering design for medium and high voltage substation projects, including equipment specification and selection, single-line development, protection and control design, and layout optimization
- Develop and review technical reports, engineering specifications, calculations, and design packages for substation facilities
- Perform and review electrical engineering calculations, including short circuit analysis, overcurrent protection coordination, and arc flash studies using industry-standard software
- Develop substation relay settings and protection schemes, ensuring compliance with applicable utility and interconnection requirements
- Provide engineering support during construction, including shop drawing review, RFI responses, site inspections, and punch list development
- Serve as technical reviewer and quality lead for work products developed by other engineers, ensuring compliance with NEC, NESC, ANSI/IEEE, and applicable utility standards
- Contribute to the on-going development of substations standards to improve the efficiency of future projects
- Mentor and develop early- and mid-career engineers, delegating appropriately and supporting their professional growth
- Support preparation of engineering proposals and fee estimates, contributing technical depth to business development efforts
- Coordinate with civil, structural, and protection and control disciplines to ensure integrated, constructible designs
