About The Position

The Senior Substation Design Engineer will support major electrical utility infrastructure projects for Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E). Working under the direction of a Lead Design Engineer, they will execute complex engineering assignments for high-voltage substations (4kV to 500kV). This role requires a high degree of technical proficiency in substation physical or Protection & Control (P&C) design, focusing on high-quality deliverable production, self-checking, and technical mentoring of junior staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET approved college or university.
  • 8+ years of experience working in substation design or similar with utility or consulting engineering firm.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office suite (e.g., Excel, Word, and Outlook).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
  • Basic written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineer’s License in Electrical Engineering preferred but not required.
  • Experience with substation design for Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E).
  • Experience with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.

Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed design packages, including general arrangement drawings, electrical equipment plans, conduit and grounding drawings, relay house layouts, and complete bills of materials.
  • Perform rigorous self-checking of all drawings and specifications to ensure accuracy and neatness before submission to the Lead Engineer for final review.
  • Conduct essential engineering analyses, including conduit and bus sizing, lighting and lightning protection analysis, grounding grid studies, and AC/DC load calculations.
  • Ensure all designs align strictly with PG&E Utility Standards, California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) requirements, and NESC/IEEE codes.
  • Assist the Lead Engineer and Project Manager in tracking design activities, attending job site meetings to define project scope, and responding to Requests for Information (RFIs) during construction.
  • Guide and coach junior engineering staff and interns, providing technical direction and supporting their professional development.
