About The Position

WSP USA is seeking a highly energetic, self-motivated, and goal-oriented Senior Structural Engineer to support our Transportation Facilities Group in the New York, NY office. This role offers the unique opportunity to work within a tight-knit team while benefiting from the resources of a large firm, providing a platform for career growth. The Transportation Facilities Group (TFG) leads and designs projects that support local and regional growth initiatives through various transportation projects. Our objective is to collaborate with agency clients to develop solutions for advancing transportation in the region. TFG comprises over 60 engineers and architects in New York, offering diverse project experience in the transportation field within the NY Metro Region. The Senior Structural Engineer will report to a lead structural engineer and be involved in designs for rail and bus stations, airports, transportation hubs, rail systems, and a wide range of supporting projects. Clients include NYCT, MTA Bus, LIRR, MNR, PANY&NJ, Amtrak, NJ Transit, contractors, and local utilities. The role involves working on projects of varying scales, allowing for exposure to multiple project types and disciplines within the New York Office.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with a focus on structural engineering, or equivalent.
  • 5 to 7 years of relevant post-education experience in engineering discipline and prior structural design experience in transportation projects.
  • PE Licensed (NY/NJ) or capable of obtaining a New York State PE license within 1 year.
  • Knowledgeable in state and city building codes, as well as industry standard specifications (IBC, ACI 318, AISC 360, etc.).
  • Prior experience working with construction documents.
  • Knowledgeable in STAAD.Pro, SAP2000, ETABS, SAFE, RAM Structural System, Mathcad, Excel or similar structural design software.
  • Proficiency of AutoCAD and REVIT; knowledgeable in MicroStation and Open Building is a plus.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results-oriented, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instructions, work independently, and comply with company policies.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills and well organized.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Civil Engineering with a focus on structural engineering, highly preferred.
  • Master of Science in Civil Engineering with a focus on structural engineering.
  • Experience working with transportation clients (i.e., Amtrak, NYCT MTA, NJ Transit).
  • Detailed experience related in transportation facility design and rehabilitation.
  • Knowledge in the development of CSI-format construction specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Lead engineering staff on various task assignments.
  • Responsible for the development of structural design details, drawings, and specifications, including calculations for new designs, rehabilitation, and renovation work.
  • Develop drawings in REVIT (BIM), AutoCAD, MicroStation, and Open Building.
  • Utilize structural software such as STAADPro, RAM Structural System, SAP2000, ETABS, and SAFE (or equivalent).
  • Utilize Microsoft Excel and Mathcad Prime to develop structural calculations.
  • Lead field inspection teams for the evaluation of structural systems of existing buildings.
  • Coordinate with various engineering disciplines and architects in the development of design contract documents.
  • Work within a paperless (or limited-use) office environment and perform remote working when required.
  • Collaborate with other engineers, professionals, and infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, local, and privately funded improvement and development projects.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
  • Develop into the lead structural engineer level.
  • Assist in the development of proposals.
  • Work on design-build and other high-profile projects.
  • Direct interaction with clients.
