About The Position

This recruitment is being held to establish an open eligible list to fill current and future Senior Street Maintenance Worker positions. This recruitment may also be used to fill positions in similar and/or lower classifications throughout the City of Menifee. The City of Menifee is a vibrant and rapidly growing municipality located in southwestern Riverside County, dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for its residents through innovative public service and strategic development. The Public Works Department serves as a cornerstone of the City of Menifee’s infrastructure, delivering high-quality services that enhance safety, mobility, and overall quality of life for residents, businesses, and visitors. The department oversees the maintenance of public rights-of-way, including streets, sidewalks, traffic signals, streetlights, drainage systems, and the city’s vehicle and equipment fleet. Its responsibilities extend to vital community programs such as the Street Sweeping Program, which supports environmental compliance; the Local Improvement District Program, which addresses the paving and upkeep of residential dirt roads; and the Capital Improvement Program, which manages the city’s long-term infrastructure investments. Public Works also leads community engagement efforts through initiatives like Street Scene, Menifee’s traffic management forum, and the Adopt-a-Street Program, which empowers residents to help keep city streets clean. In addition, the department collaborates with regional partners on storm drain maintenance, supports emergency response efforts, and provides traffic engineering services to ensure safe and efficient travel throughout the city.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to graduation from high school and four (4) years of responsible experience in public works or construction maintenance work equivalent to that of a Street Maintenance Worker II.
  • Possession of a valid Class A California Driver’s License with a tank endorsement and with no manual transmission or air brakes restrictions, to be maintained throughout employment.
  • CPR and First Aid certification within one (1) year of employment.
  • Applicants are required to complete DOT mandated alcohol and drug-screening. (A positive test or refusal to test during the past two years will disqualify an applicant from consideration for City employment).

Responsibilities

  • Leads, reviews, assigns, and performs the work of staff engaged in construction and maintenance in public works areas including streets, sidewalks, storm water and drainage systems, street sweeping, graffiti abatement, and traffic signage and striping.
  • Develops and implements crew assignments; inspects and reviews work methods, performance, and quality of work performed; evaluates and provides input and recommendations on employee evaluations; assumes responsibility for the more difficult and complex tasks.
  • Performs field observations to ensure compliance with division policies, practices, and City ordinances; prepares reports for the Supervisor related to division activities.
  • Trains, supervises, and evaluates employees on the maintenance and operation of equipment and vehicles, hand tools, and communications systems.
  • Assigns, directs, and performs breaking and removal of pavements; digs, shovels, hauls and loads soils, sand, gravel, cement, asphalt mixes and other materials, tools, and equipment; cleans up work sites upon completion of job.
  • Assigns, directs, and performs the sweeping and shoveling of debris and litter, carries cans and heavy objects and loads trucks; assists in emptying loads at dump sites.
  • Assigns, directs, and performs the operation of various types and sizes of trucks and motorized equipment, such as dump trucks, tractors, skip loaders, bobcats, backhoes, front loaders, jackhammer, and other power tools; inspects vehicles and reports maintenance as required.
  • Drives vehicles to work sites and sets up and removes barricades to protect crews from street traffic including lane closures and DUI checkpoints; directs traffic in roadways to protect crews.
  • Assigns, directs, and performs the removal and installation of street lighting poles and fixtures; maintaining, repairing and making alterations to buildings, facilities and equipment; remove and/or paints over graffiti on public property; assisting in the fabrication, assembly, and installation of traffic signs.
  • Lays and rakes, rolls and compacts hot asphalt and oil spray.
  • Assigns, directs, and performs, a variety of concrete, cement and masonry work.
  • Oversees, operates, and maintains a variety of street maintenance tools and equipment; inspects division equipment and ensures compliance with division practices; responds to maintenance needs and schedules appropriate service and repair.
  • Assists in the monitoring of contract services; inspects the work of private contract maintenance services providers.
  • Oversees and participates in directing the work of specialty crews.
  • Serves as acting Public Works Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Maintains reports and records.
  • Meets with and responds to inquiries and concerns from the public.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
