About The Position

Aurora’s Systems Engineering team architects, validates, and integrates hardware, software, and safety-critical operations into an autonomous vehicle platform. The Senior Staff TLM (Technical Lead Manager), Security Systems serves as the technical bridge between Systems Engineering, Product Security, and autonomous vehicle hardware and software teams. The role focuses on hands-on engineering, requirements definition, threat modeling, and system integration to build security into vehicle hardware architecture, the safety compute stack, and cloud telemetry. The position translates high-level security architecture and regulatory requirements into system-level design specifications, trade studies, interface definitions, and verification plans. Security is to be engineered into the platform alongside functional safety, system performance, and reliability. Work locations are flexible for US-based employees, with Mountain View preferred and other listed locations including San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Seattle, BJC, Detroit, and Bozeman; fully remote work is not available. Employees are expected to work from the office at least three days per week, with some roles requiring up to five days based on operational needs. Job level is negotiable based on experience.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of experience in systems engineering, embedded systems engineering, or product security engineering within automotive, robotics, aerospace, or safety-critical hardware/software systems.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Cybersecurity, or a related STEM field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in system-level security controls, including HSMs or TPMs, secure boot chains, applied cryptography, and secure communication protocols such as SecOC, TLS, and secure CAN/Ethernet.
  • Experience writing technical system requirements, defining Interface Control Documents (ICDs), and performing requirements traceability using systems engineering tools such as JAMA, JIRA, or DOORS.
  • Hands-on experience performing threat modeling, including TARA or STRIDE, and failure mode analysis on complex cyber-physical or embedded systems.
  • Excellent cross-functional technical leadership skills and a track record of driving system-level decisions across software, hardware, and safety teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of automotive and cloud security standards and regulations such as ISO/SAE 21434, ASPICE, ISO 27001, or UNECE R155/R156.
  • Practical experience engineering systems that interface safety-critical autonomous compute stacks with off-board telemetry or cloud control infrastructure.
  • Hands-on experience with HIL testing, penetration-testing coordination, or vulnerability remediation on physical systems.
  • Experience aligning functional safety (HARA) and cybersecurity (TARA) analyses to manage co-dependent vehicle risks.
  • Experience engaging, communicating with, and influencing OEMs, Tier-1s, suppliers, or commercial partners to improve security posture.
  • Experience building and scaling security architecture frameworks from the ground up in safety-critical or heavily regulated industries.
  • Advanced security architecture or engineering certifications such as CISSP-ISSAP, CISM, or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Translate architectural security goals into detailed, testable system and subsystem security requirements across vehicle compute, sensor suites, internal networks, and cloud gateways.
  • Conduct system-level threat modeling, including TARA and STRIDE, and vulnerability impact analyses on safety-critical ECUs, onboard compute platforms, and telemetry links.
  • Lead trade studies with Hardware and Embedded Software teams concerning hardware security anchors, secure boot chains, onboard key management, and cryptographic overhead on real-time execution.
  • Align system fault mitigation with security threat response in collaboration with Safety Engineers and Security Architects, ensuring security defenses do not compromise functional safety.
  • Define security test plans, trace requirements through the V-model, and collaborate with validation teams on hardware-in-the-loop and vehicle-level security verification.
  • Author technical security requirements for component suppliers and Tier-1 hardware partners, and evaluate technical compliance during integration.
