Senior/Staff Power Systems Engineer, Grid Interconnection

Heron Power•Scotts Valley, CA
•$160,000 - $200,000

About The Position

Heron Power is a startup building power electronics for the modern grid, beginning with converters that connect utility-scale renewables, storage, and loads. The Senior/Staff Power Systems Engineer will own grid interconnection for Heron’s grid-forming inverters and solid-state transformers across utility-scale PV, BESS, and large-load projects. The role spans model development and validation, interconnection studies, utility and ISO approval, and field commissioning. The engineer will build and validate the models used by grid operators, demonstrate compliance with grid codes and regulatory requirements, and connect simulation results with hardware testing and field performance. The position serves as a technical representative to utilities, ISOs and RTOs, developers’ interconnection teams, and customers, collaborating with Controls and Systems Integration teams. It also supports sales by designing power systems solutions and helping customers understand hardware performance on the grid.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of power systems engineering focused on inverter-based resource interconnection at an inverter OEM, developer, utility, ISO/RTO, or consulting firm.
  • A track record of taking inverter-based resource projects from model development through interconnection approval and into commissioning, with ownership of outcomes at each step.
  • Hands-on proficiency in PSCAD and at least two of PSS/E, PSLF, PowerFactory, and TSAT, including building, tuning, and debugging user-defined models.
  • Working knowledge of IEEE 2800, NERC PRC and MOD standards, and FERC and ISO/RTO interconnection processes.
  • Strong understanding of inverter control fundamentals, including grid-following and grid-forming control, current limiting, PLL dynamics, and weak-grid and small-signal stability, with the ability to explain model behavior.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with grid-forming inverter models and requirements, such as virtual synchronous machine (VSM) or droop-based controls.
  • Real-code EMT model development, such as wrapping C or Fortran controller code as a PSCAD DLL using the IEEE/CIGRE DLL interface.
  • Experience with utility-scale BESS or PV plants, including PPC tuning and grid-code compliance testing.

Responsibilities

  • Own Heron’s inverter and plant models across RMS and EMT platforms, including user-defined models, WECC generic models and grid-forming variants, and EMT models based on production controls.
  • Benchmark models against each other and against controller hardware-in-the-loop; prepare model validation reports, parameter sheets, and user guides required by utilities and ISOs.
  • Support interconnection studies for PV, BESS, hybrid, and large-load projects.
  • Guide developers through the interconnection process, including inverter technology changes on queued projects; prepare model submissions, respond to study comments and deficiency letters, and work through material modification and restudy reviews with transmission providers.
  • Carry projects through energization by defining plant controller settings and coordination, preparing and running commissioning and model-validation test plans, analyzing field data and disturbance recordings, and supporting post-energization performance reviews.
  • Represent Heron technically with utilities, ISOs and RTOs, developers’ interconnection teams, and customers.
  • Support sales by designing Heron power systems solutions and explaining grid performance to customers.
